About this deal

Though this may sound surprising (received wisdom is weight matters above all else on climbs), the tide may be turning in our understanding of what actually slows road cyclists down. Now, I find myself thinking of bottles. It seems to me that there's only two options here: either I get 2 standard/ww bottle cages, or I go for the Elite Crono CX bottles. There may be other options, but either they're not very popular, or I just didn't find them.

For longer training rides, you can easily swap to a standard cage instead. But I don't recommend leaving them there on race day. There are other good places to put round bottles (between your bars and behind the saddle), you might want to consider other options than round bottles on the frame. On the other hand, Gerard Vroomen of Cervelo has publicly stated that in some cases, a standard bottle on the downtube can have a negligible aero penalty. But more recent data on modern frames (even by Cervelo) suggests that round bottles aren't the best option for frame hydration. Fork: SuperSix EVO Hi-MOD Carbon, integrated crown race, 12x100mm Syntace thru-axle, flat mount disc, internal routing, 1-1/8″ to 1-1/4″ Delta steerer, 55mm offset (48-54cm), 45mm offset (56-61cm) Example of Elite Chrono aero water bottle and cage system How many watts does an aero water bottle save? As we mentioned earlier, bottle placement can be very individual, but the results we saw for Jess were typical to what we see with a lot of riders. We often recommend that if in doubt, place a bottle behind your saddle as this usually results in the least penalty. In some cases it has even been faster! Having a bottle between your arms is also a good option as we found with Jess, but it works best with riders that have their arms close together, rather than wide apart. Jess decided to go with the fastest of the available choices (500ml bottle behind the saddle) for her future long distance TTs. Between the arms was 1.2w slower at 40kph and 0.5w at 30kph, but the fastest location was behind the saddle at 0.7w (40kph) and 0.3w (30kph) - 20sec over an IM bike leg.Reduce overall system weight while improving integration compared to the previous generation SuperSix EVO. (Focus on reducing weight out of the handlebar, seat post and fork to take overall weight down) For one, it has an aerodynamic design that reduces drag, though it is not quite as effective as XLABs or Profile Designs in this way. Still, the Speedfil A2 does allow for Garmin integration which definitely puts it in the “serious contender” market. Since the RZ2 has to compete with the XLAB, it might seem like it falls a bit short, but this is still an incredibly capable hydration system. The Nex-Gen ‘cage-less’ aero water bottle is the world’s first truly cage-less drink bottle designed to fit bicycle frames of all shapes and sizes with potential to reduce overall weight and significantly enhanced aerodynamic features resulting in less drag.

Still, this is one of the lightest hydration systems that we saw regardless of the mounting position. The Speedfil might be a more budget-friendly option, but it still provides most of the features that you expect from a front mounted torpedo position hydration system.Cannondale’s SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod frames shave over 100 grams from the conventional Carbon frames by replacing multiple layers of intermediate modulus fibres with fewer layers of much stiffer high modulus fibres, taking overall weight down while retaining all the stiffness and strength required for a responsive, brilliantly-handling race bike. Aero water bottles look very fancy on a road bike, even more, when they are fully integrated with the frame or handlebars. We have all seen pros using them on triathlon events. And many wonder if aero bottles are really worth it or if it is just a pro thing. Aero bottles provide to some extent an aerodynamic advantage over a standard water bottle. It is a relatively low advantage, as water bottles being protected by the downtube do not generate much more drag than the frame of the bike.

Aero bottles are allowed under World Triathlon (ex ITU) regulation. The use of aero bottles is not listed in the regulation, meaning you are allowed to use them when racing triathlons. Should you buy an aero water bottle? The Cannondale SuperSix EVO Carbon frame delivers a beautifully lightweight chassis at around 915 grams via a carbon layup that consists primarily of intermediate modulus fibers with some higher modulus fibers strategically placed for increased stiffness where it’s required. The hydration system tested in the study is similar to Profile Designs Aqualite drinking system for aero bars, which has been developed specifically for triathletes. In this light, I have equipped it with wheels/handlebar/tires that would give me any practically minuscule yet theoretically gratifying gains, without compromising other variables too much. As with all products used for a triathlon, the weight of the hydration system may be just as important as all of the other qualities combined, if not more so. This does not mean that there is one “right” answer, but it does mean that you need to have an acute understanding of your body’s needs ahead of time.

In comparison with a 500mL standard bottle fixed on the downtube, the power you have to produce when riding can be reduced. Let’s see a comparison of the watts saved by different solutions for hydration on the bike: Rank While the type of a triathlon fueling system might impact how you use the product, the mount will generally determine which type it is in the first place as well as how easy and convenient it is for you to use. Much like with the hydration system type, the mount is as much about personal preference as it is about getting any kind of leg up on the competition. Cannondale have invested a lot of time and money into product development and testing, with this process playing a massively important role in the final design and construction of the SuperSix EVO Gen 4. Constant lab and real-world testing have informed the team at Cannondale throughout and have left them with some impressive stats to boast at the SuperSix EVO’s launch. Frame: SuperSix EVO Carbon, integrated cable routing w/ Switchplate, 12×142 Syntace thru-axle, BSA 68mm threaded BB, flat mount disc, integrated seat binder, SmartSense compatible
