About this deal

Reading has the ability to completely transform your life situation. Even though reading is required literacy teaching for schools, its application goes way beyond that of the academic setting. By harnessing the power of reading, ordinary people can develop skills that are otherwise inaccessible. Demonstrate what skilled readers do to make meaning from a text so that children can practise this for themselves in shared reading, in revisiting the same book or other familiar books they have heard read aloud, and in re-reading their decodable books or carefully selected independent reading books several times. If children are not being read to at home, provide opportunities for them to be read to and with at school. Ensure you have read and selected the books in your classroom book corner and that these allow all your children to see themselves in what they read as well as books which offer perspectives from beyond children’s own lives or contexts.

Children with reading difficulties are at greater risk of developing mental health problems later in life, including depression, anxiety, behavioural problems, anger and aggression. 26 In our fifty years of research and work with schools, we have long known the benefits for all children of making reading for pleasure a core part of the curriculum for all children. In July, the update to the DfE Reading Framework was published, and we are pleased to see this recognised more fully in this revised version, alongside the continued emphasis on phonics to support decoding. You'll find that sooner or later, your writing works will start to be influenced by the pieces you read (in a good way!) This is when you know that you've really grasped something from your readings and are starting to apply it. People who are single, widowed, or in poor health are among those at increased risk of feeling lonely more often. 17

When you read a non-fiction book, you also consume an enormous amount of information on the subject you're reading about. One study found that older adults who regularly read or play mentally challenging games like chess are two and a half times less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Time-limit interventions and balance what other learning is lost with what will be gained when deciding how and when these take place. Access to the online resources is via an annual membership. Schools that participate in the face-to-face Power of Reading training course receive a year’s membership for free.

The CPD is fantastic and has really got me thinking about my department and the curriculum in a way I haven't thought of in the past. It's a real help. Thank you." PoR Online attendee 2021 Research has proven that just 30 minutes of reading can lower your blood pressure, heart rate, and feelings of psychological distress. Having books in the home is associated with both reading enjoyment and confidence. Of children who report having fewer than 10 books in their homes, 42% say they do not like reading and only 32% say they are 'very confident' readers. For children who report having over 200 books at home, only 12% say they do not like reading and 73% consider themselves 'very confident' readers. 8 Books provide some of the most engaging entertainment on the planet. As the author Stephen King said, "Books are a uniquely portable magic."A good tip for increasing writing skills a lot in a short span of time is to select tough piece and work on decoding it. You can do this in the form of guided reading / shared reading or just on your own. Both will work to increase your reading fluency, which will in turn make you a better writer. Analytical/Logical Thinking Skills

One of the worst things that technology has done is make us lazy. Almost everything is available with ease. We hardly make an effort to focus on solving issues or concentrate on bringing about any improvement. This is my first year using CLPE planning and I have to say that I feel that my English teaching has greatly improved. I am more enthusiastic in my teaching, my pupils have become more engaged, and there is far more speaking, listening, vocabulary, drama, role-play, art and writing woven throughout my teaching" Joanna Shobbrook, Year 5/6 Teacher, St Michael’s Primary School. The ability to analyze details and piece together stories and facts in your head is something that reading books can provide you with. Take Advantage of The Power of Reading! Studies have shown that those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns. 29 Prioritise the selection of a range of quality texts before decorating or theming the classroom book corner.Participation in shared reading groups is linked to enhanced relaxation, calmness, concentration, quality of life, confidence and self-esteem, as well as feelings of shared community and common purpose. 21 As well as additional or focussed phonics teaching, other strategies to support older early readers include pre-teaching, reading aloud and discussing challenging texts, revisiting and re-reading. A year ago my school started our journey with the Power of Reading, and if I am being totally honest, at first I was quite sceptical. We had just completed a successful year in year 6 with some very positive results, and I didn’t see why we needed to change what had worked so effectively beforehand - I am one of those who believes if it isn’t broke why try and fix it! This four day programme shows teachers how to build a book-based curriculum by putting children’s literature at the heart of their primary English curriculum. The programme develops teachers’ subject knowledge and understanding of proven pedagogical approaches.

The more you read, the better your writing skills will become. You would tend to focus on various aspects of writing that would allow you to write more effectively than others. 9. Tranquility All the books we choose have to lend themselves to sustained study in a primary classroom. We need to be able to see where we can offer in depth and real writing experiences, meaningful study of literary styles and rhythms, opportunities for response that is creative and open-ended, all whilst keeping children engaged with the characters and the story as a whole. Perhaps you want to learn how to code, paint, or start a successful business ? Maybe you want to learn how to stop procrastinating ? CLPE’s English Curriculum Maps demonstrate how to create a progressive English curriculum built around our Power of Reading book recommendations and associated teaching sequences . Create an English curriculum in which children experience quality books across a wide range of literary forms which both reflect and broaden their lived experience.OECD (2010) PISA 2009 Results: Learning to Learn: Student Engagement, Strategies and Practices p. 32-4] ↩ Adults with lower levels of literacy are more likely to believe that they have little impact on political processes, and are less likely to participate in volunteer activities. 13 Detailed teaching sequences for over 300 high quality children’s texts, including embedded opportunities to explore phonics, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation. The cool thing is that the more you read, the better your memory gets. Think of your brain like a field of grass. The more you walk down a particular path, the more beaten down it gets, and the easier it is to take that same path the next time. When you read a lot, you're beating down your memory pathways. In the twenty years since CLPE’s Reader in the Writer research, our Power of Reading training programme , book recommendations and resources have continued to build expertise in teachers’ knowledge of children’s literature and children’s engagement and attainment in reading.
