About this deal

A few years later, Ephron transplanted and updated one of the greatest of Hollywood comedies, Ernst Lubitsch's The Shop Around the Corner (1940), as an encore pairing for Hanks and Ryan called You've Got Mail (1998). It was a pleasant enough affair. Ryan and Hanks play New York singles having a fling via the internet, without realising that they already know and fiercely dislike each other. Making up for them not having been much on screen together in Sleepless in Seattle, Ephron utilised the obvious physical chemistry between the two stars.

Ephron started her career writing the screenplays for Silkwood (1983), Heartburn (1986), and When Harry Met Sally... (1989), the latter of which earned the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay, and was ranked by the Writers Guild of America as the 40th greatest screenplay of all time. [3] [4] [2] She made her directorial film debut with comedy-drama This Is My Life (1992) followed by the romantic comedies Sleepless in Seattle (1993), Michael (1996), You've Got Mail (1998), Bewitched (2005), and the biographical film Julie & Julia (2009).

Nora Ephron let her women characters be vulnerable, but never destroyed. As she advised the graduating class of Wellesley College in 1996, "be the heroine of your own life, not the victim. Because you don't have the alibi my class had — this is one of the great achievements and mixed blessings you inherit: unlike us, you can't say nobody told you there were other options ... You won't be able to blame the deans, or the culture, or anyone else: you will have no one to blame but yourselves. Whoa!" The mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, issued a statement saying Ephron's death was "a devastating one" for the city's arts and cultural community. Love, Loss and What I Wore Toronto cast named". I give this as a present more than other book. I buy it for people so often that I've been known to give girlfriends two copies, one birthday after another' - Dolly Alderton Here's another fascinating thing about the episode: the unbelievably tall woman who had an affair with my then-husband had a husband of her own - an extremely pompous British civil servant I thinly disguised as an extremely pompous American civil servant - and to this day he constantly takes shots at me for the damage I did to his family. I mean, really! He and his wife eventually divorced, and let me tell you, it was not my fault! And this book had nothing to do with it either! This is the first time I have written about this episode when I wasn't thinly disguising things, and look at all these exclamation points that have just leapt into the text. Meh. Most of this was written around 2005 - 2007, and it's mostly just rantings about Bush and Watergate. My least favorite section by far; I skimmed it because of that, and also because it was repetitive. Another cornerstone for the 3-star rating. a b McGrath, Charles (June 26, 2012). "Nora Ephron Dies at 71; Writer and Filmmaker With a Genius for Humor". The New York Times . Retrieved July 10, 2022. The Most of Nora Ephron gives you a close-up and thorough view of the writer, which seems a particularly important thing to do, because her death was met with such an emotional response. In New York Magazine, Frank Rich wrote eloquently of her generosity to younger writers who were just starting out, and of how good she was to him in all ways. "She continued to give me invaluable advice about everything," he wrote, "from career to restaurants, from what to read to what to think." Rich concludes that, in making her decision to keep her illness private, "For all the instructions she gave us and everyone else about life, she was teaching us something about dying, and we had no idea at the time she was doing so."Journalist, essayist, playwright, food writer, novelist, screenwriter, film director/producer: Nora Ephron hit paydirt in them all . . .
