It occurs as the result of gut damage, caused by a stomach bug or infection, undiagnosed coeliac disease, or a long course of antibiotics, for example.

Most babies grow out of reflux and many researchers suggest it would be more useful for parents to be given advice on how to deal with simple reflux. For example smaller feeds more often, but with the same overall amount of milk per day, can help. Hungry baby milk These formulas are based on 100% whey protein, which has been partially hydrolysed (broken down) and contains less lactose than standard formulas. Many formulas include an additional prebiotic ingredient: oligosaccharides. These are often referred to as FOS or GOS, which are produced commercially from lactose and sucrose, or 2’-FL or LNnT, which are artificially made to mimic oligosaccharides found in breast milk. However, although they are safe to add to formula milk, there is no strong evidence to support the efficacy of these additional ingredients.Aptamil and Cow and Gate although different companies are the parent company (I think it is Danone but am not sure) so they make one each but both are based on the same milk. Although most follow-on formulas, apart from HiPP Organic, provide a similar amount of calcium to cow's milk per 100ml, they are all higher in sugar and more expensive. Higher levels of sugar can encourage a preference for sweet foods and in the long-term can lead to dental cavities. Lactose is found in soft cheeses, e.g. cream cheese and cheese spreads, mozzarella, feta, etc. However, due to the maturing process of hard cheese, most of the lactose has been removed. Therefore, hard cheeses such as cheddar and Edam are usually tolerated on a lactose-free diet.

Babies progress at different paces. You can offer different consistencies: smooth, soft, mashed foods or finger foods. Claims such as ‘Closest to breast milk’, 'Gold advanced System' and 'Complete nutrition' are meaningless, as the exact ingredients of breast milk are unknown and change according to a baby’s age and feeding patterns. Until one, milk is the main component of your baby's diet and cow's milk doesn't provide the balance of nutrients they need. Formula milk isn’t difficult to prepare, as long as you have a decent kettle to hand. Here are our four top tips: Solid food should be introduced around 6 months of age, when your baby shows signs that he/she is ready (sitting up, holding head, reaching for food...).

Aptamil Anti-Reflux, Cow & Gate Anti-Reflux and SMA Anti-Reflux are all marketed as helping reflux, posseting and regurgitation. The majority of products advise on three scoops per feed. However, HiPP Organic and Aldi advise on two scoops. This will be the result of a more concentrated powder. General advice for introducing solids (although this will not be dairy free specific, more detailed information is available at: ( https://www.nhs.uk/start4life/baby/first-foods/ ) Under the regulations, infant formula is also not allowed to be advertised to the public or be offered at a discounted rate. This is so that it doesn’t undermine breastfeeding. Follow-on formula contains the same ingredients as infant formula, and its levels of nutrients are also strictly controlled under the same regulations. It contains higher levels of iron and vitamin D, which babies need a higher dietary intake of from six months; because of this, some people choose to switch to follow-on formula.

Education and training ו Bronchiolitis and viral induced wheeze - guidance for primary care professionals Nutritional Reference Value (NRV) information is based on the typical composition of the product. Guideline daily amounts are those for a typical adult (men and women). Nutritional support for lactose intolerant infants. Aptamil Gold+ Lactose Intolerance is not suitable for general use and should be used under medical supervision. Some infants may require a long term lactose-free routine, so it is important to consult your healthcare professional for more information.

The difference is found in the protein make-up of the milk. Standard infant formula has a whey:casein ratio of 60:40, which is very similar to breast milk. Hungry baby formula has a whey:casein ratio of 20:80, which is similar to cow’s milk. Most babies grow out of lactose intolerance once their gut has recovered. To test this, try giving small amounts of dairy products e.g. ordinary yogurt or food made from cow's milk. If your baby has loose nappies and is unsettled, stop lactose-containing foods and try again in 1-2 weeks. It will take a bit of time for your baby to regain his/her ability to digest lactose, so increase the amount gradually. Your toddler should meet all their nutritional needs through the food they eat and a multivitamin drop that contains vitamins A, C and D as recommended by the government, not through expensive fortified milks. First foods can include a wide range of simple, unprocessed foods (rice, oats, barley, semolina, peas, beans, lentils, meat, fish, eggs, ground nuts fruit and vegetables). The amount of lactose in your own diet isn’t related to your baby’s intolerance, so eliminating lactose from your diet won’t make a difference here. If you think your baby may be reacting to the lactose in your breast milk, the best thing to do is seek advice and guidance from your GP.
