How are you, nae offence, a whallopper getting a thing like that? Well, I used to open up early for him and do a fry-up, make him a mug of tea. Another source, Proceedings of the New York State Bar Association (1902), uses the word quoting someone from Montreal: Not two pennies to rub together, the soles hanging off his shoes, and not even a coat to keep him warm. In the parts of the U.S. where they don't use "y'all," they use "you guys" instead, as shown on the map above. 5. You Lot

Yous Two is a good choice by Alanna-Davies Productions, and it’s a shame that the run at Camberwell’s Golden Goose Theatre is so short. This new theatre company is definitely one to look out for. Both yourself and, rarely, yousself (or youseself, coordinate with the spelling youse) are found as reflexive forms. But going with your impulses can lead to difficult choices. When it’s always been the two of you, how easy is it to get out, or to let anyone else in? You-uns (from you + ones) is a South Midland form most often found in uneducated speech; it is being replaced by you-all. The Jungle at the Young Vic. It’s one of the best pieces of theatre I’ve ever seen, it’s extraordinary, full of warmth and humanity. It really shows you what theatre can do.Modern English, unlike some other languages, has only one form of “you” for both singular and plural. It’s been suggested by some linguists that “you-all,” “you-uns” (a Pittsburgh expression) and “yous” or “youse” actually originated as attempts to differentiate singular “you” from plural “you.” I can see that this might be a natural response on the part of immigrants (and not just Italians) whose first languages had both singular and plural forms.

The actors were well supported by the stage manager and tech team who ensured a smooth running performance. Fifteen-year-old Billie has lived with her dad in their little flat for as long as she can remember, but all that's about to change. She's got big plans – get Dad a job, sort out her grades, and live in a house with five bathrooms. Thank you for inviting me to your production of Yous Two, I am glad that you have finally been able to bring it to the stage after an 18-month delay. The play is a character-led play with four actors set entirely in a bathroom belonging to Jonny and his daughter Billie who he has brought up alone. The four actorsworked well together, and it was clear that they understood their characters and were committed to the story teasing out the social issues within the plot with appropriate moments of humour. This was the director’s first time directing a full-length play and together with the Producer transported us into this moving story of friendships, family ties and teenage angst. They had obviously worked hard with the cast to develop their characters. plural ) : ( chiefly Australia , New Zealand , South Africa , New York City , New Jersey , Philadelphia ,Delaware ,Boston , New England ,Northeastern United States , Chicago , Cincinnati , Liverpool ,Cape Breton , Ireland , Scotland , Michigan , Tyneside , Wearside , Teesside ) Like Clare McIntyre’s Low Level Panic, Yous Two is set entirely in a bathroom, although this one has a manky carpet, a faint smell of piss and is in need of a really good coat of paint. It belongs to Jonny, the tenant and 36-year-old single parent of his 15-year-old daughter Billie, whose mum committed suicide soon after her birth. In the bathroom, Billie chats to her dad and entertains her school friends Rachel and Fudge. She is a lively, intelligent teen who gets great grades in maths and science and has ambitions to go to a better school, as well as to university. But when she gets unexpectantly pregnant, her future is suddenly put in doubt.

Georgia Christou’s debut play is a moving portrayal of the conflict between personal aspiration and familial responsibility, and what happens when those you should depend on need you more than you need them.

According to this usage note yous/youse is used in informal speech especially the northeast of the United States. The usage appear to have been common especially among immigrant communities whose first language had both the singular and the plural forms: Never get high on your own supply, that's what they say, isn't it? What are we going to do? Smash up the operation. In fact, English speakers have come up with a bunch of words for plural "you." Snooty grammar teachers might not like them, but they get the job done. 1. Y'all Would that satisfy you? What pin? Where? You see that sideboard over there, Winston? Yes, of course.

That big angry bear pulling your pint then looking for an excuse to glass you with an empty tumbler? No. Yous, youse is, um, used mostly in such northeastern cities as New York and Boston, but even there it is not used by the majority of speakers. It is used mostly by lower class, less educated, (older) people. A: You may have too much time on your hands, but there are worse things to do with it than think about the language! At least (presumably) this preoccupation keeps you off the streets. This one is a hallmark of the dialect known as "Pittsburghese." People who speak this dialect are referred to as "yinzers." 3. You-uns Notes: Another reader wrote on April 19, 2018, to comment that Irish has a plural form of “you”: sibh (plural of tú). This reinforces the notion that the use of “youse” and such forms has a connection with Irish immigration.I’ve accepted this but, in the interest of regaining some dignity, I do have a theory about its origins. New York is a city of immigrants who, like my grandparents, may have learned the English language but may have also retained some of the grammar of the home country. In English we express the plural of “you” with “you two” or “you three” or, in Katie Couric’s case, “you all.” But in Latin languages it is expressed with one word that, literally translated would be “yous” (for example: vous in French or vosotros in Spanish). That nine of clubs looked like a right carry-on, didn't she? What was it you said your name was again? Mark. So nothing's really changed, then? Well, I Right, for old time's sake, right, hit us with both barrels. With its 70 minutes distributed over nine neat scenes, Yous Two is a short play but a resonant one. Chelsea Walker’s vigorous production, with a cutaway design by Rosanna Vize, has four excellent performances: Shannon Tarbet’s Billie is sparky but also thoughtful, even melancholic, often more mature than her dad (Joseph Thompson as a lovable rogue). Leah Harvey’s Rachel and Ali Barouti’s Fudge are likewise vivid character studies, completely convincing. Parenthood can be both empowering and fragile, and Christou’s debut is thrilling in its aplomb and in her potential. Definitely a name to watch.
