About this deal

She trains with other students, who although all Solari, have very different powers from one another. I flinch, a prickle spreading across my scalp as Cheyenne’s impatient voice cuts through the panic rising in me.

Onyeka has to learn to allow her hair to be a tool and also to deal with her unchecked emotions, which activates her power. Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun would make a brilliant class read, rich in cultural references, for children in UKS2, both those who love superheroes and those who love a good story. She learns to value and celebrate her Nigerian roots and embrace her hair which is essential to understanding her powers. I always love a superhero story, and I always love a magic school story, and this is such a refreshing one with some interesting twists and turns. I hoped it would be one of the rare exceptions, because usually I am luckier with middle grades, but sadly this wasn’t the case. This sounds sad and if she dwells on it, sometimes it does make Onyeka a little sad, but overall her and her Mom have a great relationship. Aside from Black Panther which is my favourite MCU movie alongside Shang Ci, I did not like the other medias I’ve mentioned, so I guess it’s only natural that I did not like this one either. The next level tech and incredible mutant abilities highlighted throughout the novel will keep readers coming back for more. Expect superhero confrontations and action violence, but there's no bloodshed, and nothing gets too graphic. She knows it too and pounces immediately, like a cheetah from one of the wildlife documentaries Mum loves.

And don't miss Onyeka and the Secret Superhero, the special World Book Day story coming February 2024! Onyeka spent most of her childhood hiding and feeling ashamed of her thick, bounteous, "difficult to control" hair.If you’ve already read book 1 you must read this one and I was delighted to see that there will be a book 3 in 2024! year-old Mia lives with her young brother Lucas and mum and dad in the city of Nubis, under the light of the forever moon and permanently starlit skies. With her sense of liberation comes the realisation of the responsibility she holds, both to herself and to others.
