I truly enjoyed Geoffrey Wellum's story of his training and chuckled a good many times whilst reading about one thing or another.

Unfortunately, he said, he couldn’t attend the event as he was busy travelling around to lots of other events and couldn’t quite fit it in. I really enjoyed the author's style of writing, he was witty, descriptive and came across with a sense of telling a story with understated facts. This is a fabulous, engrossing book that tells the story of a young Spitfire pilot during World War Two.

I was fascinated by this book because although I knew about the Spitfires I had never read a book about them and their pilots. It reminded me strongly of the Officers’ Mess, the atmosphere of which is so well described in his book. As someone who had seen and heard interviews with Mr Wellum often, the sense of already 'knowing' him added a great deal to the reading of the book, as you could hear him speaking to you. I didn’t think I would be that bad, but his passing made me realise just how much of an effect he had had on my life. We have the best picks, including AB Gets His Wings by Richard Bland, The RAF Association Puzzle Book and Women On The Front Line by Kathleen Sherit.
