About this deal

I love Mrs. Jeffries! I've read over half of this series and have loved all of them. Inspector Witherspoon has come a long way since his first cases'. That's due in a large part to the encouragement Mrs. Jeffries gives him during his murder cases. What the inspector doesn't know is that Mrs. Jeffries and the household staff play a big part in solving the murders. But throughout the cases, the inspector has gained experience and confidence. Though the staff doesn't play as large a part in gathering the clues, what they do find out is always helpful. Despite their mutual dislike for Nivens, Mrs. Jeffries and Inspector Witherspoon know the man isn’t a cold-blooded killer. Now they’ll just have to prove it. (Goodreads) Bert Santorini, an ice delivery man in the East End of London, ends his day by meeting someone in an alley off the Commercial Road in Whitechapel, a notoriously bad neighborhood. He has survived by his wits thus far and the person he is waiting for will pay if anything happens to Bert. Unfortunately for Bert, he's met by an unknown assailant who shoots him dead. When the police inspect the scene of the crime, they discover a gun belonging to Inspector Nigel Nivens lying next to the body. When the sensational press get ahold of the story, right away, they accuse the police of covering up the crime to protect one of their own. Superintendent Barrows is unimpressed and puts Inspector Witherspoon on the job. Scared, Nivens turns to Mrs. Jeffries for help but she doesn't trust him. It doesn't look good for Nivens, all the evidence points to him and Mrs. Jeffries knows they need to see justice done, no matter who the murderer was. She doesn't think it was Inspector Nivens, as much as she dislikes him. To the people of the West End, Bert Santorini was a good member of the community but in Whitechapel, he was not well liked and everyone seems to have a motive for murder. Can Inspector Witherspoon and Mrs. Jeffries figure this one out in time to save Inspector Nivens or will he finally be found guilty of a crime he may not have committed? At the Jubilee Ball honoring Queen Victoria, the death of Hannah Greenwood sets off an investigation by Inspector Witherspoon and Mrs. Jeffries. Their search for answers uncovers hidden secrets and rivalries in the prestigious Hyde Park Literary Circle, where the victim was a member. Get ready for more in Mrs. Jeffries On the Ball! Mrs. Jeffries On the Trail Inspector Nigel Nivens in not a nice man or a good investigator. In fact he is terrible at his job and has always done everything he can to make life difficult for Inspector Witherspoon. But even his powerful family can't help him after he maliciously tried to hobble Witherspoon's last homicide investigation. He's been sent to a particularly difficult precinct in the East End of London as penance.

Mary Frances Jeffries (1819 – 1891) was a madam and procuror in London's underworld during the late 19th century. As with most of the other books in this series, it opens with the murder. I don't like seeing the murder happen. It makes it easier to guess who the murderer is. I prefer to follow the clues and figure it out as I go along. Fortunately, in this story, it's unclear who the murderer is right away. It takes a lot of sifting through clues to put them together. I had my suspicions and finally knew for sure who did it about 2/3 of the way through. I was surprised it took Mrs. Jeffries so long to figure it out. They had all the clues. Alas, she's getting older and her mind isn't as sharp as it used to be. The book ends with a lot of drama and hints at a future case for the servants to solve and more tension with Inspector Nivens.

During Sir Edmund Leggett’s engagement party, a stalker takes their obsession to deadly new heights. Naturally, the police suspect the stalker, but Inspector Witherspoon has a hunch. To uncover the truth in “ Mrs. Jeffries Stalks The Hunter,” he turns to his housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries, who always manages to get to the heart of the matter. Mrs. Jeffries and the Silent Knight The timid inspector Witherspoon knows he is in dire need of help when Dr. Bartholomew Slocum gets murdered at his surgery. He hasn't got a clue how to proceed. Though someone is thrilled at the misery of the good inspector. When newcomer Ellen Langston-Jones is found dead, Inspector Witherspoon suspects Lucius Montague, who was seen threatening her. Despite everyone’s belief in Montague’s guilt, Mrs. Jeffries has doubts. Facing the challenge of saving an unlikeable character, she must change the investigation’s course or risk an innocent man taking the fall for the true killer. Prepare to unveil the truth in the gripping tale of “ Mrs. Jeffries Turns the Tide.” Mrs. Jeffries and the Merry GentlemenThe evidence was all there: a dead body, two dessert plates, and a gun. As if poor Mr. Ashbury had been sharing a piece of cake with his own killer! The old bloke had plenty of enemies. She said: “Having done what many others have through Covid times, I have reflected on my career and decided to make some changes.

Hannah Lonsdale was - WAS - the fiancé of Mr. Marks up until moments before he died. Gossips claim Hannah Lonsdale, a middle-aged wealthy woman, had a great row with Mr. Marks and then she left. She doesn't seem very upset by the news of his death and not terribly surprised either. The club manager and other members indicate that Hannah Lonsdale's family has a lot of clout and no one wants to upset them. Is Inspector Witherspoon certain Miss Lonsdale went home and didn't return to the club? Did she have family there with her? Mrs. McElhaney, a wealthy matron, was previously engaged to Mr. Marks. She's spitting nails furious that he proposed to another woman while still dating HER! EEE! That's bad. That's a good reason to want revenge! She doesn't blame the woman, fortunately, but her eyes were opened to Mr. Marks's character. How good a shot is she? Where was she when the murder happened? Miss Lonsdale is very smart and a very good archer. I think she could easily be the murderer. Mrs. McElhaney doesn't seem too shabby in the brains department either. What if they teamed up to kill their ex-lover? I can definitely recommend this if you want an interesting mystery and some fun interactions with some lovely people. Now, I have to wait for the next one. Thirty-Nine books into the series and I’m still loving it. The characters are as fresh and delightful today as they were in the first book. There is always a serious mystery to solve, but it is done with wit and charm galore. I always look forward to each new book because of its warmth, it’s family feel – all of the characters have the utmost respect and care for each other despite the differences in their stations in life. Each book is a delightful addition to the series, but you can also read each book as a standalone should you wish to do so – but you would be missing the character and relationship growth that has occurred in the previous books. A cross between a cozy mystery and Agatha Christie, plenty of false leads and a plot that keeps you wondering if "the butler did it".Eccentric Annabeth Gentry pretty much keeps to herself. Besides her recent inheritance - and the attention her bloodhound gets for digging up a body - her life is, in fact, rather dull.

Unfortunately, the same thing can be said of the characters. They're sketches of supporting cast. With the exception (maybe) of Mrs. Jeffries herself, everyone can be summed up in one or two adjectives: 'alcoholic,' 'susceptible to pretty girls,' 'an idiot.' Sir Edmund Leggett has a stalker - a young lady whose attentions have turned from puppy love to obsession. Rather than be alarmed, Sir Edmund is somewhat flattered. That is, until his engagement party, when someone murders him in cold blood.. Witherspoon doesn’t like Nivens, but he doesn’t believe he is capable of murder. However, the evidence is pretty clear. In Witherspoon’s view, the only way to conduct the investigation is to be unbiased and to start fresh and look at ALL of the clues, not just the obvious ones. As he investigates, he learns that there are many, many, many people who have reasons to want the victim dead. In “ Mrs. Jeffries and the Missing Alibi”, Inspector Witherspoon is wrongly accused of murder and banned from an investigation by Scotland Yard. But, with his housekeeper and partner in crime, Mrs. Jeffries, by his side, they defy expectations and work tirelessly to clear his name. Mrs. Jeffries Stands CorrectedIt may be Inspector Witherspoon's life, but it is Mrs. Jeffries who really runs things. Not only is she the housekeeper who keeps life at home smooth running, she is also the one who seems to guide the Inspector in solving the mysteries that come his way. In Book 26, Inspector Witherspoon investigates a deceptive Yuletide murder case amidst wedding preparations. Lies, intrigue, and long-buried secrets emerge as he unravels the truth amidst uncooperative witnesses and sulking relatives. Mrs. Jeffries Speaks Her Mind Set in Victorian London this is #41 in the series if you can believe it. Having followed Mrs. Jeffries from the beginning I have come to know the characters like old friends. Everyone is a likable individual and somehow the author has managed to keep them fresh and engaging in every story. Mrs Jeffries, who joined the Cornish school in 2019 to replace Matt Middlemore who said at the time that he would not be returning after his year-long sabbatical, cited personal reasons for her departure.
