About this deal

Shogakukan collected its chapters in ten tankōbon volumes, released from November 29, 2013, [7] to March 10, 2017. The story is punctuated by short flashbacks explaining Dai's love of jazz, and references to giants such as Bill Evans, Charlie Parker or Miles Davis.

When I first moved to Tokyo, I tried to overextend myself, thinking: ‘I mustn’t lose to the people from Tokyo! Blue Giant (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese jazz-themed manga series written and illustrated by Shinichi Ishizuka [ ja]. After that, as he continues his daily practice, the master of the jazz bar where Dai has appeared introduces Yui, a music class instructor. It takes many chapters before he graduates from his hometown and sets off to find his fortune in Tokyo, although the manga continues beyond the events of this film, catapulting Dai out of Japan and off to the United States, where he finds a whole new set of adventures at the prestigious real-world Berklee College of Music. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. A second series, titled Blue Giant Supreme, was serialized in Big Comic from September 10, 2016, [9] to April 25, 2020. It ranked 41st on the 2018 "Book of the Year" list by Da Vinci magazine, and ranked 45th on the 2019 list.

I remember the intensity and the feelings I had back then, and honestly would love to go back find my passion in music again. A fourth series, set in New York City and titled Blue Giant Momentum, began serialization in Big Comic on July 25, 2023. Each of them has a different philosophical approach to their music – Shunji just wants to be with his friends, Yukinori wants to be the best, but Dai wants to learn on the job and become a better musician.

The incredible music strikes a chord deep inside him, and he immediately decides to dedicate himself to the saxophone. I would of course love this series to get an adaptation, film or anime, but I fear It may not give it justice. Blue Giant tells the story of Dai Miyamoto, a high school student who lives alone with his father and sister, works part-time at a gas station, and has recently developed a passion for jazz.

Although he gave a lot of failing marks to Dai's performance, he was invited to come to his house next time, and Dai willingly accepted. If I had to compare it to anything I guess I would recite the works of Asano Inio (Oyasumi Pun pun guy).

If you are as lost as I am, not knowing what the goal of your life is and living the same minimal routine. His brother, Masayuki, who knew about it, bought a saxophone with a loan and gave it to him as a gift. With all that said, blue giant still does a terrific job at depicting jazz music, it often spends pages or even an entire chapter depicting a performance.

This book is fantastic and the panel art is absolutely stunning, I had to compare my tenor sax to the pictures because i was so impressed! He wants to be kind but can’t, tries to make himself look cool, and sometimes acts diffident, which is all part of the charm of Yukie. Combining optimistic storytelling with intense emotion, this bighearted musical celebration is a delight. Dai's friends and mentors keep him down to earth and are just as important to the story as he is (not Individually but to the supporting cast as a whole).
