In The Rescue, Bettina is a reporter who impulsively adopts a Mexican street dog while doing a story on a Tijuana animal shelter. Bettina is doing a story about an under funded animal rescue in Tijuana when she spots Joe recovering from a gun shot wound. The passenger d'Alcacer is in flight from Europe following the early death of his wife and is friendly with the owner's enigmatic wife Edith Travers.

Because these characters are preordained lovers, their feelings prescribed by fiction conventions, their psychology amounts to little more than a profusion of banality. The tension, the uncertainty of what will happen next, the gloomy atmosphere, are all vivid and overwhelming. He turns out not to be a street dog at all, but rather a drug-sniffing dog formerly “employed” by the DEA.In the 1920 Malay Edition of Joseph Conrad's collected works, the publisher Doubleday, Page and Company featured "Author's Notes" at the start of each novel -- in his note for The Rescue, Conrad shows great gratitude for its critical reception and gives background on the project and its 20 year hiatus.
