About this deal

You can also set up heating schedules within the app to change the thermostat temperature throughout the day. In the diagram above, the thermostat is located in the living room. So you could set it to 18°C and also schedule this to change to 20°C between 7pm - 8pm, making it nice and cosy for you in the evening when you settle down in front of the TV.

The output of a radiator can be controlled by restricting the flow of hot water in or out. This can be done a number of ways with manual valves, traditional TRVs and smart radiator valves. Although the TRVs make a small humming noise while operating, I found that they were very quiet in operation. Once I was used to them, I could easily sleep while they operated. This may be because the radiator is undersized for the room it is fitted in. If this is the case, then the room will never reach a high enough temperature for the valve to shut down. This negates the use of a TRV and so a plumber should be called to establish if the radiator is correctly sized to the room it is in. Both Vaillant and Worcester use load compensation making the combined TRV and smart control set up incredibly efficient

Once the auto-balancing TRVs are installed and set, the auto-balancing valves will ensure that radiators permanently receive the correct flow rate regardless of other TRVs opening and closing or changes to the system. This technology is proven to save on average 8.8% on energy costs, so will help keep your bills lower and ensure your home is always comfortably warm. On the controller, navigate to ‘signal strength’ through the settings on the screen. On the thermostat, press and hold the + and – buttons for five seconds, then navigate to signal strength Although you can use a smart thermostat to control your home’s heating, a smart radiator valve allows you to operate the radiators separately. They are a great addition to any central heating system because they allow you to have complete control of any radiator via a smartphone application or even through voice commands and other smart devices. That’s clever, as you can have a spare room that’s set to keep it just warmed (to prevent condensation) using one schedule; when a guest comes, you can apply a different schedule. It’s slightly more work to do that here than with custom modes on Honeywell Evohome, but I still appreciate the flexibility on offer.

A Wiser home is a smarter home

Hold the transmitter unit 2 metres away from the SCR unit and then replace the batteries in the transmitter. Replacing a TRV head but not the valve This means you can remotely set the thermostat temperature, and it will turn the boiler on and off to maintain the temperature of the room it's placed in. All the smart radiator valves can communicate with the smart thermostat, meaning you can turn the boiler on and off by changing the settings of any of the heating devices. Out of our three home setups, this gives you the most complete control of your heating.

This allows you to only have heating on when you need it, and in the rooms you need it – potentially saving money on heating bills. Versions of both are available. The battery-operated control is used for a two wiring installation and the mains version is used for a four wire installation.

Below are the three simplest heating setups. We show you what you can and can't do with them. Thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves David concludes: “Right now, we’re all working towards a net-zero future and looking for ways to save money on our energy costs. Our new auto-balancing TRVs are a simple and low-cost option that can offer a permanent and effective solution”.

For example, if a householder understands when their heating is due to come on and when it is scheduled to be off, as well as how to alter the time settings, then they should be able to manage their system timings without your assistance. A cylinder thermostat is used to measure the temperature of the hot water stored in a cylinder when using a A programmer manages the timings for two channels and is typically used with conventional boilers, where both heating and hot water need to have time control. You can easily set up heating schedules. For example, the heating can be turned off in all the rooms but the office during the day, and then be turned on low in the bedrooms and higher in the living room during the evening. Seal the new valve tail piece with 4-6 layers of PTFE tape to prevent leakage. Screw the new valve onto the tail piece on the radiator and the copper pipe. The third-party smart TRVs reviewed here all do much the same thing, it is the control thermostat that is the most important choice. The Honeywell EvoHome is suited for much larger properties. All six other thermostats are compatible with the vast majority of heating systems (old and new boilers) and will operate the boiler efficiently based on a learned pattern of when you need heat.
