About this deal

Kenneth Anderson’s illustrations bring Frankie’s quest to life through the journal pages interspersed within the story and I loved the detailed map of Parallelia at the start of the book. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. This is the first middle grade book I’ve picked up for 24 years and even though I’m a lot older now I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of it. no, that is not spelt incorrectly) Forcing Frankie to embark on a rescue mission across a magical realm.

Instead they end up at Grandad's house and Granda is a bit unique, they have been kept away for a while and can't really remember why. Instead, they have to stay with their grandad and Frankie is dreading it as they don’t know him very well. The content and ambition of the show remains the same: to give every pupil the opportunity to engage with authors and illustrators in their own classroom using the power of the internet. Before they know it, Frankie and Joel find themselves embarking on a quest (it’s not a quest, Frankie hates quests) to rescue their grandad. Smith even cites the rules of the genre explicitly to readers, reminding them, for example, that every villain has a whole in their plan.We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. I found myself smiling all the way through the book and I absolutely adored the subtle Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit nods throughout, specially the “second breakfast “. Frankie did have big plans to watch YouTube and eat pot noodles that weekend but it looks like she'll just have to go on an epic mega-dangerous quest instead. Very soon, she has unwittingly joined the Fellowship of the Bacon Roll and is surrounded by the brave warriors, noble sidekicks, mysterious double-crossers and conflicted villains that one would expect to see in any generic fantasy story. A fun and funny adventure- with a narrator that frequently breaks the fourth wall - that deconstructs and gently mocks a lot of the classic quest fantasy tropes.

From the incredible imagination of Chris Smith – bestselling author and now a major new solo talent – comes an extraordinary accidental adventure for fans of Cressida Cowell and Pixar’s Onward. She knows that there is nothing more important in life than being connected to your friends with WiFi and a smartphone, and she knows that little brothers who talk about orcs and goblins all the time are totally lame.Things get worse for Frankie as soon as they arrive and she realises there’s no phone signal and grandad has no wi-fi! The bestselling author of Kid Normal delivers a hilarious, action-packed adventure in which Frankie must change her plans of watching YouTube and eating pot noodles for a rescue mission to save her kidnapped Grandad from a weird magical world.

However, please be aware that it uses a YouTube player and that you should check your school’s permissions to ensure that YouTube isn’t blocked. Frankie used to think it was cool too, until she started secondary school and it somehow became not cool any more. Answering all the important questions you never knew you had, like where fairytale characters go to the toilet, this book offers plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. When their Granda is kidnapped by gnoblins they have to enter a magical realm to get him back embarking on a magical, dangerous and unbelievable tale like the games their parents created.Things take a turn for the worse when Grandad gets kidnapped by gnoblins (no, that is not spelt incorrectly) forcing Frankie to embark on a rescue mission across a magical realm filled with strange creatures, dangerous enemies and – worst of all – absolutely no WiFi. Think Lord of the rings meets bedknobs and broomsticks with a bit of harry potter, echoes of Labyrinth, adventure, creatures and a quest despite Frankie raging it is most assuredly NOT A QUEST. She is rather disappointed, therefore, when she finds herself stuck at her boring old grandfather’s house for the summer with her annoying little brother, Joel. It's also a really good fantasy in it's own right, with fun, interesting world-building, some original ideas and good characters.
