About this deal

The Gothic Bedroom is suitable for up to two people, and is a self-contained one bedroom property with its own shower room.

In 1939, several German Jewish refugee children, traveling on the Kindertransport, found themselves in Abergele, North Wales.Under trying conditions, while the families they had been separated from faced the gravest of dangers, these children and their adult guardians established a Hachshara at Gwrych Castle: a training centre intended to prepare them for the dream of establishing a Jewish homeland in Palestine ( Eretz Yisrael), where they hoped one day to be reunited with the families they left behind. One of the most recognisable buildings in North Wales, the castle is now widely known for hosting I'm A Celebrity. In 2020 and 2021, at the height of the Covid pandemic, Gwrych Castle was familiar to the British public as the setting of I’m A Celebrity. The truly terrifying experience takes place a Gwrych Castle this October, perfect for a half term day out.

Escape to Gwrych Castle, based heavily on the memories and words of the children who were there, also charts how the young refugees gained confidence in other ways. The remainder came from various places, including 31 of them who arrived straight from the very final Kindertransport to escape the European mainland. Yes we have large car park and you can purchase your car parking ticket when selecting your tickets. The children arrived at the castle in Abergele in 1939 as part of the 10,000 Jewish refugees who escaped to the UK from Nazi-occupied countries and at the time, only refugees aged 17 or under were allowed into Britain.

They were taught how to live on a kibbutz (a community traditionally based on agriculture), so they would have been taught how to farm and how to live an agricultural life during their time there. Following persecution in Germany, approximately 20 hachsharot were relocated to Britain between 1939 and 1945, with Gwrych Castle the largest. The couple lost almost all of their family in the Holocaust and their years at the Abergele castle was a time when they could "still be children" - and also where their "real love story" began. Having met at the castle, theirs was a real love story; they went out for another seven years and then got married at the age of 21 and had two sons.

In this fascinating debut, historian Andrew Hesketh tells the story of these refugees and the community they built, shining a light on a chapter of Jewish history that deserves to be far more widely known.
