We begin this sequel in 1939 with Martha Wallace who is coming from America to find her birth mother. The beautiful Castle Deverill, which is connected each of these characters, now stands ruined after a fire. I look forward to reading her expanding novels, although I seem to savour them for the right moment as I never want to not have one of her novels to look forward to on my TBR shelf. Como dije anteriormente,la historia se encuentra mezclada con infinidad de personajes , muchos de los cuales ya conocíamos en el primer libro, en esta entrega sera introducido muchos más ya que la historia avanza hasta casi finales de los años 30´s. Yet their peaceful way of life is threatened when Ireland’s struggle for independence reaches their isolated part of the country and shapes them in ways they could never have imagined. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. Most of Montefiore’s novels touching, magical and remarkable as they are, are a combination of real life experiences/stories and some fiction. Montefiore does a great job of including pieces of background from the previous novel to ensure an easy transition for the reader. Montefiore also adds another locale, by basing an additional story thread in South Africa, allowing her to contrast all three settings. Even though the book did what I feared and wrapped some things up easier and neater than I would like, some of the ending parts were satisfying and I think I'm going to have a bit of a book hangover from this trilogy.

Yet all of them have one hope to get back what they had – the unwavering love for Deverill Castle and the memories they had made in it. A compelling story of family and history, from the author of the top ten bestseller Songs of Love and War. I already miss the beautifully descriptive, emotion-evoking writing and the vivid pictures of Ireland and London that Montefiore provides throughout the book. Montefiore lives in London with her husband and two children, Sasha and Lily, but the family also frequents a cottage in the Hampshire countryside where she grew up.Set in the ruggedly wild countryside of West Cork, Ireland, in the early part of the twentieth century, Songs of Love and War is an epic tale of three very different women all born in the year 1900: Kitty Deverill, the flame-haired Anglo-Irish daughter of the castle, Bridie Doyle, the daughter of the cook and Celia Deverill, Kitty’s flamboyant English cousin. Alle verhaallijnen komen mooi tezamen en dit gaat gepaard met zoveel emoties dat je bij wijlen er zelf melancholisch van wordt. They met through historian Andrew Roberts, who believed they were made for each other, given that of all the people he knew, they were the only two that could recite the Evita by heart. Spanning the course of at least 100 years we follow the Deverill family and all there chaotic wrong doings during England and Ireland's political disputes.

I didn't really like the ending, it was too much destiny for me, and the epilogue was just random in my opinion. Si pensaba que la primera parte había sido increíble, esta segunda parte se ha llevado la delantera! Aan personages ontbreekt het niet in dit deel en ook maken we kennis met nieuwe en boeiende karakters. But, by the time you finish this magnificent novel you will be anxious to read the third in the series, as well as keen to go back and read the first! Her house, which features on many of her novels, is a seventeenth century farmhouse with lovely ancient bluebell trees and stunning gardens that burst into a blaze of color during spring. The sweeping nature of the novel and the grandness in scale, makes it a wonderful romantic saga to get lost in. I needn't have worried though - the intimate, character-led storytelling that was sadly lacking in the second book was back and it felt like the first book all over again, familiar and cozy.
