About this deal

I thoroughly enjoyed the gentle pace and getting to know all the members of the Bolitho family who showed plenty of war time spirit, resilience and love for one another. The females take centre stage as you’d expect given the title and it’s interesting to witness the changing of attitudes over time. Clara’s past is revealed through Caroline’s rummage through a trunk that mysteriously ends up in her hands and I loved Caroline’s voice in the prologue which sets the scene perfectly for all that follows. My other frustration with the book is that one of the central themes is how women are stronger than men, and they're the ones who consistently hold everything together while the men run off and leave them. While I enjoy a good feminist historical novel, this one came across as slightly more male-bashing than was necessary. The women in the novel seem bent on sleeping with whoever comes near, even if they're warned over and over that they're bad news. I hardly think it's fair to blame a guy for abandoning you when he never even came close to promising he'd stay... What I particularly enjoyed about this book was the emphasis on the strength of the women. Every one of the Bolitho women has had challenges to face up to and every one of them has dealt with them in the best way they could. They are all determined that their own children should be protected from their past mistakes and that they should have opportunities to better themselves. I had particular admiration for Clara and all she went through although there was one particular decision of hers I didn't agree with at all. I won't say what it was of course, as it is one of the big secrets of the book, but it was an emotional part of the story when that was resolved.

Hannah has always been curious about her mother’s mysterious past, but the outbreak of the Second World War casts everything in a new light. As the bombs begin to fall, Hannah and her brothers are determined to do their bit for the war effort – whatever the cost. By the time we reach the present day, we meet Caroline, Hannah's daughter, who now has her own daughter, Natalie. Caroline has been aware of some of the family secrets for a while and knows that she descends from string, capable women who prospered despite the pitfalls of their lives, but she has never known the identity of her father. Unexpectedly she receives a trunk containing some of her grandfather Ernest's possessions & amongst the old possessions she also find strands of her family history. Edmund pretends to regret and laments that the nature of his character, which honors his father, must be sacrificed for the loyalty he feels for his country. As a result, Edmund excuses the betrayal of his father by claiming that he willingly and easily left him vulnerable to Cornwall’s anger. The Power Of Forgiveness In Narnia PDF / EPUB File Name: Daughters_of_Cornwall_-_Fern_Britton.pdf, Daughters_of_Cornwall_-_Fern_Britton.epubThe blindness of Gloucester’s eyes serves as a metaphor for his emotional blindness toward his sons. Only when Gloucester is blind can he truly understand the characters and people he loves. Lear is both personally and politically influenced by Gloucester’s involvement. King Lear Characters

Caroline lives a quiet life on the Cornish coast. But a devastating discovery threatens everything she holds dear... This secret could break her family, but only if they let it. She informs France of all of her wealth, which she obtained from the pow’r that made her. Cordelia told her husband in her farewell message: Because that is his love for me, I am not his wife. Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia are the only three who remain. The dukes of Burgundy, for example, aren’t the only ones. You can hire this lovely, unpriz’d maid to help you. Even though he is an old man, he has never been completely unknown to anyone, even though he is very old. Our sister has always been one of his favorites, and he has now cast her off for no apparent reason. Please let us strike each other as one, and allow our father to carry such authority with which he is capable, that he might make this surrender his last surrender of his will but offend us. The read is gentle, charming and engrossing. The detail of the landscapes in Cornwall, Kent, London, Penang and France whisk you away to different points in time in a way that feels authentic and makes you read on. There is no one definitive answer to this question. In general, however, it can be said that the play King Lear is a tragedy that tells the story of the titular character, who is a king who makes a series of fateful decisions that lead to his downfall. The play is typically seen as a commentary on the human condition, and its themes include loyalty, betrayal, madness, and blindness. The characters are so well drawn and it is Clara, a strong and determined woman, whose actions might not always be understandable, but who continues to care for her family at a time when her secrets could have left her with very little, who stands centre stage.

Featured Reviews

This was a gentle family 'saga' spanning multiple generations of the Bolitho family from WW1, through WW2 and onto present day. I think this is the author’s first foray into historical fiction and although I enjoyed this gentle, unassuming read immensely, I didn’t like it quite so much as her previous novels. A new Fern Britton novel will always have me rushing out to buy at the earliest opportunity and on the strength of her previous successes I do think Daughters of Cornwall will sell just as well.
