About this deal

Schwalbe's tyre levers have a small but clever extra wrinkle that makes it easier to mount some tyres, and they're tough enough for the tightest tyre/rim combinations. In this instance I would guess Park Tool products are associated with being high quality and reliable, and Schwalbe felt it was worth paying to cash in on that reputation. Most tyre levers nowadays are plastic, and you might never need anything tougher; but steel or alloy options do still exist for really stubborn tyre/rim combinations.

My metal levers can hook on to a spoke to prevent the tyre from popping back into the rim so no need for fragile paperclip design thing, which will no doubt break. Some mechanics swear by putting both levers under the bead before using them to lift the bead, and the hook method sometimes isn't possible if the tyre is too tight. Assuming you're happy with your tyre/rim combo, the next thing to consider is the material of your rims. The qualities we look for are how easy it is to hook the tyre lever under the tyre, the flex and robustness, as well as any extra qualities or features specific to the design. The paperclip is only used when fitting and doesn't bend - it's clamped securely between rim and tire so isn't subjected to much force. The larger black lever is a good 15cm long, so not a contender for a small saddlebag – but that huge leverage spread across the broad, rounded hand-end is very welcome when things need to get 'persuasive'. Rest of the body is very flexible and I'd imagine it's internally reinforced because I've put a huge amount of force through them wrestling tight tyre/rim combinations.

Have used classic black Cyclo nylon levers for years at home but black is far too easy to lose at the roadside and can be difficult to find in a large bag. Really, what is more fun than flatting far away from home, being thrilled you lugged that spare tube and pump, and then having your tire levers snap in two? This is further complemented by the bold shape of each lever with dual spoke hooks making even the tightest of tyres easy to remove. This is only needed on the most stubborn of tyres and enables you to get another lever under the bead to pull the tyre off. While im at home though I have a crankbrothers Speedier Lever and a BBB cycling BTL-78 'easy tire tool' which i think is direct copy of a park-tool tyre tool. Mr Ormrod I always read how good these levers were, but never felt the need as my plastic ones still did the trick.

As such, plastic is our go-to choice, however there are still some pitfalls to be aware of with these sort of levers. Those who have had plastic levers snap on them will tell you just how painful unwillingly punching your wheel’s spokes can be. With no flex, it’s that much easier to coax the tyre over the rim – and it’s much more reassuring feeling like you’re not about to break them. However, when dealing with tight tires, and especially tubeless tyres, it works much better to finish at the valve for installation and start near the valve for removal. It was still a time-consuming job and I still wouldn't risk this tyre/rim combo in the field, but that I could do it at all validates the usefulness of Schwalbe's little hook.

The Pedro’s levers, though, are on another level, being just so easy to slip under the tyre and absolutely rock solid. If you ever, somehow, manage to use your gorilla strength to break them, our levers are backed by Pedro's lifetime warranty, and we will happily replace them for you. The angled tip can cut into the bead slightly, making sliding the lever around the rim more difficult. The unique feature here is a clip in the lever body to hold in place the section of tyre that you've already lifted over the rim wall. We’ve tested some of the best tyre levers on the market, so you can head out for a ride safe in the knowledge a pesky flat won’t leave you stranded.
