About this deal

The Travel Scope 70 provides clear views of these gas giants, allowing you to see their colorful bands and moons in stunning detail. Celestron’s Travelscope 70 is yet another example of Celestron using their brand name, reputation, and clever marketing to unload a glorified toy telescope onto buyers. The TravelScope, however, is a unique twist on those, as it is sold as both an astronomical telescope and a terrestrial/spotting scope. It is more or less a failure at both. Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface. Internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it. Overall, the stability and versatility offered by the Celestron TravelScope 70 tripod make it an excellent choice for those who want a reliable telescope for both terrestrial and astronomical observations. Celestron’s CGEM mounts have always proven to be popular, but if you find the motor isn’t working as well as it should, you can swap it out with a Celestron Motor Assembly. This motor and encoder assembly works with either the RA or Declination axis of the mount, making this a convenient, cost-effective solution.

The included 45-degree erecting diagonal is not only uncomfortable to use for an astronomical telescope but also extremely low in quality. The entire body and housing is plastic, as is the barrel for inserting it into the focuser drawtube. The prism seems to be plastic too. The Celestron PowerSeeker 127EQ Telescope has a very long focal length and a very large aperture but falls to seventh because of its poor tripod and difficult collimation. In eighth place is the Celestron ExploraScope 22103 114AZ Reflector Telescope. It has some positives, but its problems mean that neither experts nor beginners will get good value out of it. The last place belongs to the Celestron Astro Fi 102, which is wi-fi ready and includes a smartphone adapter. The app’s poor performance and overall low-quality parts mean that few people will enjoy using it. So, what you’ll be able to see with the Celestron Travelscope 70 is dependent on a variety of factors such as atmospheric conditions, light pollution levels, and your own personal viewing location. Generally, you can expect to observe bright and clear views of the moon’s craters, planets such as Jupiter and Saturn (including their moons), star clusters, and even some nebulae. After a rest indoors, I set the telescope up again with my good tripod, the mirror diagonal off my Orion ST80, and a red dot finder, and I went out and had a lot of fun with it. It isn’t a powerful telescope, but I personally enjoy small telescope observing quite a lot. The wide-field views you can get with small short telescopes make up for the small aperture, so you can fit a lot of stars in the eyepiece. If you go in with the correct expectations (objects will be dim and gray) and look for the right objects (look for objects in guides for small telescopes and binoculars, rather than the famously named nebula you’ve seen in pictures), the telescope can work just fine for deep sky viewing from a suburban or darker sky. In a rural sky, it’d be powerful enough to see every one of the Messier objects. I find that it’s much easier to find and appreciate deep sky objects in a small scope after you’ve gotten familiar with deep sky observing in a larger telescope. But there’s no reason you can’t start small if you set your expectations right.

The kit includes everything you need to get started, including an erect-image diagonal for terrestrial viewing. The optics are decent for a budget scope, but keep in mind that this isn’t a high-end instrument. I want to like the Celestron TravelScope 70, I really do. I have had fun with it. But I just can’t recommend it to beginners for astronomy. And though I’m not an expert on daytime spotting scopes, I’d probably advise against getting one for that purpose as well. It is a nice optic ruined by poor mechanical design and accessories, and unless you’re willing to spend more time and money replacing its accessories (or if you have them already lying about, as I do), I can not recommend it. You can also use it to observe deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula or other galaxies far away from our own. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced astronomer, this travel telescope is sure to impress.

Lastly, while the focal ratio of f/5.7 makes this scope quite fast, allowing for brighter views of deep-sky objects like galaxies and nebulae, it also means that there is a smaller margin of error when focusing. This can make it more difficult for beginners who are still learning how to properly focus their telescopes. However, with practice and patience, focusing should become easier over time. Zane Landers, Thank you so much for taking the time to review this piece of Crap Celestron telescope, your review is 100% Accurate & very true about the Junk telescope Celestron model # 21035 Travel scope. I got my on Aeroplan Miles and is a Piece of Pure JunK, exactly as you describe it. I always been fascinated with the distance stars and Planets and also terrestrial observations. Which telescope for Looking at Moons,Stars and planets,Terrestrial Observations and a good pair of Binoculars for Bird Watching would you recomend? Thanks Reply The Celestron Travel Scope 70 Telescope was designed with travelling in mind while offering exceptional value. The Travel Scope 70 is made of the highest quality materials to ensure stability and durability. All this adds up to a telescope that gives you a lifetime of pleasure with a minimal amount of maintenance. Overall, if you’re looking for a portable yet powerful telescope that delivers excellent performance at an affordable price point, then the Celestron TravelScope 70 is an excellent choice. Its compact size makes it easy to transport to any location where you can enjoy some stargazing without compromising on image quality or stability. With its high-quality eyepiece and finder scope plus impressive magnification range capabilities – this model is sure to exceed your expectations!

The two real letdowns among the accessories are the finderscope and the prism diagonal. The finderscope is ridiculous. Galileo’s telescope was probably better. These things barely belong in a McDonald’s happy meal toy, let alone a telescope. It is barely sufficient for sighting through it to find targets, but it isn’t usable on its own as a wide-field finderscope. By night, Travel Scope 70 DX delivers great views of the planets, the Moon, star clusters and brighter deep sky objects like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy. During the day, Travel Scope 70 DX doubles as a spotting scope. Enjoy amazing views of birds, wildlife, boats on the water, migrating whales, and so much more.

I like that the Travel Scope 70 comes with a lot of accessories including a full-size tripod, but again, expectations shouldn’t be set too high. Although the tripod is a fully-extendable one, it’s best suited for bench and table-top use. Fully extended, it’s too flimsy to support the lightweight frame of the scope and I feel it becomes very unstable to look through. While you may think that a company like that would have nothing for beginners, Celestron makes a wide range of telescopes for different budgets and ability levels. That means there’s probably a great option for anyone. Not compatible with #93648 Off-Axis Guider, not compatible with #93519 2" Mirror Diagonal (discontinued) The Celestron NexStar 130SLT Computerized Telescope is another great choice for Celestron fans. It has a computerized mount like the top two models on our list, enabling you to find objects in the night sky, even if you have little astronomy experience. There’s a very large 130-millimeter focal length, which is phenomenal for the price. That’s large enough to let you see just about anything in our solar system, and several deep-space objects as well. It also comes with two high-quality eyepieces. These let you see at 26x and 72x magnification, respectively, so you’ll be able to make the most of your telescope with the included eyepieces. If you’re already a telescope owner, this might be a good portable option for you, for the same reason as the ST80. I find the TravelScope 70 is lightweight enough that it plays much nicer on photo tripods than the ST80 that I own, and despite getting the ST80 specifically as a grab-n-go scope, I found that I would end up taking the TravelScope 70 outside instead, especially if I wanted a peek at something behind the trees, visible from a different part of my yard. It’s a bit like a ShortTube 70, in overall design and in application, and for an astro-tinkerer you may be able to fix some of its shortcomings.

Featuring a compact and portable design with ample optical performance, the Celestron Travel Scope 70 Telescope is ideal for terrestrial as well as casual astronomical observation. Additionally, its long focal length allows for high-magnification views without sacrificing image clarity.

Some of the features of this telescope include a tripod, two eyepieces, a finder scope, a diagonal, and an altazimuth mount. What is the aperture of the Celestron Travelscope 70? The 20 mm eyepiece will do well for most purposes with its wider viewing, bright and sharp image resolution, and good power. It provides up to a max useful magnification of 140x but I found pushing it to 168x magnification that the manufacturer states will result in picture degradation.
