About this deal

Then you’ll need to adjust your exposureaccordingly because the lenses also tend to cut out light in the scene. In that same tradition, the new PORTRA 400 Film is the ideal choice for portrait and fashion photography, as well as for nature, travel and outdoor photography, where the action is fast or the lighting can? with finer grain and an emulsion overcoat specially designed for scanners, Portra Films reproduce beautifully.

The film also appears to be very consistent, producing reliable images even in varying temperatures and lighting situations, although best results are achieved in bright daylight, where this film really shines. This is a setting that can easily be adjusted post process if you find that the extra warmth is something you dislike. With its sunny feel and colours and contrast that enhance a scene without making it unrealistic, Portra seems to deliver exactly what you envision. The Kodak professional film also features a cinematic VISION film technology that provides a fine grain structure with edge detailing and sharpness. Some of our partners may process your data as a part of their legitimate business interest without asking for consent. On large format I only use the 160 version because I’m going for ultimate quality and lower grain along with a specific look.

Choose KODAK PROFESSIONAL PORTRA Films for natural skin tones, ideal colour, and finer grain in every situation. At true ISO 400 speed, this Portra 35mm film delivers spectacular skin tones plus exceptional color saturation over a wide range of lighting conditions. Chris's editorial work includes not only editing and scheduling articles but also writing them himself. This news was never explicitly announced, but comparing Kodak Gold 200’s spectral sensitivity curves with the published specification sheet for Fuji’s new 200 film showed identical information. Also an incredibly versatile film, I feel very comfortable overexposing my Portra 400 to get blown-out highlights, the film handles one or two stops of under and over exposure with ease. It’s important to still make the image look like it was taken at night, so remember that shadows and unlit parts of the frame should still appear properly dark. Portra 400 is no different in that sense, and I think it’s that warmness combined with the more muted colours that brings it so many fans.

You can actually end up with quite a bit of saturation on Portra if exposed this way, but be careful as shadows can get muddy and oddly oversaturated. This means that the film is almost always being overexposed by more than a full stop, and skies might be overexposed by a stop or two (or sometimes several) more than that. Learn or discover a new technique, build on your skills, or be inspired to have a go at a bit of DIY. Kodak Portra 400 is a film bound to not disappoint you–especially if you can know and understand what you’re going to be getting beforehand. When the exposure is compromised or not according to your requirement, this high ISO helps in tolerating the exposure and produce bright and sharp images.

Using Portra 400, I wanted to retain a bit more saturation for this landscape scene so I average metered the foreground at 320 and shot just like that. Kodak may be the last man standing when it comes to professional-grade color negative film (RIP Fuji Pro 400H), but there are still some great consumer-grade options when you want to save some cash and set yourself apart from all the other Portra-toned fish in the sea. Using a two stop GND filter is a bad idea with a tree sticking so high into the sky as you’d end up seeing an obvious dark line, but you can always get away with a soft one stop filter and Portra can handle the difference.
