Some folks out there couldn’t care less about the brand reputation of their watch, but I believe it’s worth learning about. Next, the rounded lugs and round case with just about perfect 40mm diameter and 15mm thickness make the Invicta 1953 a genuine pleasure to wear. The white dial, bold blue hour markers, three subdials, and a data complication add to the retro feel.
The spacing of the markers is off, meaning that while the 0 position is properly aligned, some of the other markers are off. Like many others, I was relieved to see no “INVICTA” script engraved into the side of the case, which was the most common grievance with previous Pro Diver references. All watches, likeness, and logos are trademarks or registered trademarks of RX SA, Audemars Piguet, Seiko Holdings Corporation, Orient Watch Company Limited, respectively. Although many Pro Diver owners report that their 8926OBs are very accurate (with Wonders of Watchdom saying in his review that his Pro Diver only gained 14 seconds over the course of a week), mine wasn’t totally flawless.
Additionally, they have gone with a more modern 40mm case size, versus the 37mm on the Rolex; leading to the dial being wider and feeling more spread out.
You also get tons of micro-adjustment, which is a blessing to my wrist after having to deal with butterfly clasps that are either too loose or too tight. However, from reading and watching lots of content about it, I had myself hyped up thinking this could be the best Invicta ever. Considering all my previous bad experiences with Invictas, I have to admit that they got this one right! Invicta has a nice design here and there, and I agree that it would be nice if they settled down from most of the messy stuff they make. The bezel insert features a lume pip at the 0 position and numerals in a font faithful to the original Rolex.Of course, we have the clean left flank this time, which is a welcome sight compared to the PTSD-inducing engravings on other models.
Invicta is also recognizable for a number of successful cooperations with other popular franchises and individuals, such as Star Wars, Marvel, S. But Invicta also famously gives all their NH35s a custom yellow rotor, a sight I now wish I’d seen way earlier in my watch-collecting career. Many YouTubers record on mobile phones which artificially boost saturation and contrast, so perhaps that’s why I expected the dial to pop a bit more. Another opportunity to remind ourselves of how great and diverse this world of horology truly is and why we’re so eternally thrilled and inspired by its beauty.
Despite how popular it is to roast Invicta, the 1953 isn’t resistant to “waterproog” and hasn’t been around since the days of Göbekli Tepe, or is an artifact from 6,477 years from today. Invicta only gives you their “flame fusion” crystal, which in reality is just sapphire-coated mineral with no AR treatment. It’s true, the vast majority of us would never be able to afford to purchase an original 6204 for tens of thousands of pounds. It features a custom dial Invicta pro diver 1953, a special request dial that was made for a Group of watch fans: Asia Mechanical Watches Group.
When I first laid my eyes upon this watch, that’s exactly the thought that was lingering in the back of my mind. Not only does it have plenty of grippy serrations but is perfectly responsive and a pleasure to use during time adjustments and winding.
I think mod opportunities are limited because, IIRC, the dial size is larger than "standard", along with hand length.
