About this deal

Can't relate to the earlier reviews at all, this remaster sounds great on my system, low end is lovely, I can feel the bass, just how I like it. This was one of the most obvious hints at what would be Richey Edward's lasting legacy: a sadness and loneliness which was to cripple him to the point of despair. Bonus content included previously unreleased demos, B-sides from the era, remixes, and a live recording, while the CD was released alongside a book of unseen photographs from the era with handwritten annotations and lyrics from the band.

In summary, while boxes have certainly been ticked, and it appears to do what it should, the band seem to have treated Gold Against the Soul rather poorly with this reissue. While i can say without a shade of doubt that this is not the best sounding record in my collection, yet i still manage to listen this version without giving me an headache due to excessive dynamic range compression. Nostalgic Pushead' interestingly also contains the sound of Sean Moore dropping a snooker ball into a frying pan, such was the freedom to explore whatever musical indulgence they desired. and Melody Maker listed Gold Against the Soul at number 8 [28] and number 25, respectively, [29] in their end-of-year lists of the best albums of 1993. Another Manics reissue means another presentation, as this will come as a 120-page A4 book with unseen images by Mitch Ikeda, many personally annotated by Nicky Wire and original typed and handwritten lyrics from the bands own archive.

Writing Leyendas Urbanas del Rock in 2019, José Luis Martín proclaimed that Gold Against the Soul saw the Manics "abandon glam punk and dangerously approach grunge". However, with the band's more beefed up, arena-friendly sound emerging in subsequent years, this album is no longer so at odds with the general Manics aesthetic. So we just phoned Dave up and said 'Look, come down, let's see how this works out', and everyone loved what we were doing, so we decided to stay with him. The album is the ex-girlfriend they want to forget, while fans keep saying what a ‘nice girl’ she was.In March 2020, following several anniversary re-releases of old albums in previous years, the Manics announced a deluxe reissue of Gold Against the Soul for release on 12 June 2020. Second album from this Walesians content excelent songs with acid protest stile caracteristic from they. The 1993 album features the singles ‘From Despair To Where’, ‘La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)’ and ‘Roses in the Hospital’. The remastering is credited to frontman James Dean Bradfield and Matt Colton, from Metropolis Studios. Gold Against the Soul takes to an extreme the hard rock sound of its predecessor and saw the band experiment with styles including funk and the then-contemporary grunge.

I was therefore keenly anticipating the follow-up and didn’t have to wait very long as the Dave Eringa-produced Gold Against The Soul arrived about 18 months after the first album and delivered three great singles in ‘From Despair To Where’, ‘La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)’ and ‘Roses in the Hospital’ (as well as the ‘Life Becoming A Landslide’ EP). In his retrospective review, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described Gold Against the Soul as a "flawed but intriguing second album". In 2013, "La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" was chosen by Clash as one of their favourite Manic Street Preachers singles. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This has really brought back a lot of memories of the four of us being in the studio and playing snooker endlessly. Yes, it is a hardcover book, but it’s A4-sized and can’t sit properly alongside the 12-inch boxes (they’re too big) or the smaller deluxe sets (they’re too small). He added that the album was "heavy, melodic and packed full of huge choruses: radio-friendly doesn’t have to be used in the pejorative sense and it's certainly more considered and mature than their debut. Scream To A Sigh (La Tristesse Durera)', also sounds quite majestic, with thoughtful subject matter, lamenting over the neglect of war heroes, the title referencing the final line of Van Gogh's suicide note. Manic Street Preachers have revealed details of the reissue of their 1993 album ‘Gold Against The Soul’.

All lyrics are written by Richey Edwards and Nicky Wire; all music is composed by James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore No. In his review for FMS Magazine, Jimi Arundell addresses the discomfort the band have previously expressed about the record; "It seems that the band have exorcised the needless shame they have always seemed to carry for their second album, and finally given Gold Against The Soul the respect it deserves". However, it's only a minor complaint, and if you turn your volume up loud enough, you won't really notice it anyway. The album has often divided opinion among fans and critics due to its decadent glam-rock sound and approach. I also found masses of Mitch Ikeda’s photos which have been never been seen as well, which was brilliant. Against that, the remaster is less congested (for example, it's easier to hear the separation of the guitar tracks) and has a better foundation in the low frequencies. No essays, no attempt to place the album in context, no annotation from any of the band to explain whey they haven’t “always been the most complementary about this album in the past”. The album's lyrical themes owed little to the political and social commentaries of its predecessor, and instead explored more personal themes of depression, melancholy and nostalgia.
