It has a traditional mechanical diaphragm actuator, not an E diaphragm, so its diaphragm works on all Nikons. The button on the zoom ring unlocks it so you can move the zoom ring between the shooting settings (18~55mm) or the collapsed lock (L) position.

As seems to be the current fashion, the smooth black plastic of the old lens has been replaced by a new stippled matte black finish, which resembles magnesium alloy and matches the D60 body. Macro is a full-frame L-mount lens that's designed to be a medium telephoto, portrait and macro lens all-in-one. However, it is not nearly as sharp wide open at 50mm (neither in the center, nor in the corners) as the other competitors, so stepping down at least to f/4 might be needed for optimal quality. The 18-55mm zooms are often delivered with entry-level Nikon DSLR bodies (such as D3400 and D5600) as a bundle.In the range of 18-55mm, VR doesn't do anything unless you take the camera off its green AUTO setting or turn off the flash to get longer shutter speeds in dim light. I was shooting with the 18-55mm handheld most of the time and used my tripod only for very few shots to do some side-by-side testing. Finally, at 55mm sharpness across the frame evens out and it is very good across the frame at maximum aperture.

I love shooting against the low sun, so one of the very crucial features is how a lens can handle direct sunlight or any other strong source of light. The physical similarity between the lenses masks a multitude of differences; most notably the new lens has a more complex optical formula of 11 elements in 8 groups as compared to 7 elements in 5 groups, and interestingly the new lens loses the Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element of its predecessor. When the camera is panned, vibration reduction applies only to motion that is not part of the pan (if the camera is panned horizontally, for example, vibration reduction will be applied only to vertical shake), making it much easier to pan the camera smoothly in a wide arc. The lens will default to VR on when attached to models released prior to the D3400: D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100.Interestingly, diffraction sets in rather slowly, and this lens shows a good resolution across the frame, even at smaller apertures. I crashed my camera on a tripod with the 18-55mm VR II AF-S lens attached (previous generation lens, featuring almost identical design), and the lens got damaged by distorting the front element, not by breaking the barrel. The AF-P lenses are different in this aspect, and you do not notice when they acquire proper focus compared to older lenses.
