This ensures that our children are well prepared to begin to learn grapheme-phoneme correspondences and blending to read in Reception and Year 1, where they will follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression which is designed to ensure that all children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. Positive attitudes to reading and choosing to read have academic, social and emotional benefits for children. Membership also includes Ongoing CPD supported by a practice map which identifies exactly what your teachers need to practise to improve the teaching of phonics and reading. Reading skills are taught discretely five times a week in 30-minute sessions for all pupils in both KS1 and KS2. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.

We use the Rapid Catch-up assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the Rapid Catch-up resources – at pace. Little Wandle is only Letters and Sounds repackaged after the DfE admitted the original version wasn't fit for purpose so most of the phonic books written to match Letters and Sounds should be suitable.

In addition to our daily phonics lessons, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. We aim for the majority of Y1 pupils to pass the phonics screening test (at least in line with national figures). Weekly content grids, lesson templates and ‘How to’ videos all help to ensure that all adults maintain consistency in their teaching and this is monitored half termly by the Reading Leader and SLT so that any misconceptions or inconsistencies can be rectified as soon as possible. This runs alongside our strong focus on language development in all year groups, as we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects. By the end of Year 1, children will have been taught all of the phonemes and graphemes in the English language and should be able to decode and read any word. Children start phase 2 of the Little Wandle phonics programme as soon as possible after starting Reception, usually week 2 of the Autumn term when children are settled in their new surroundings. Each book also contains parent’s notes and a ‘retell the story’ activity to support children’s comprehension and vocabulary skills. Our Foundations section includes a complete offer for Nurseries, which includes guidance, training and resources for three areas: Foundations for Phonics, Foundations for Language and Foundations for a Love of Reading. We teach letter formation using our formation phrases, which make a link between the mnemonic and the letter. The SEND Programme is not additional practice for those children who are falling slightly behind their peers. This progression is based on the DfE’s publication ‘Letters and Sounds: Improving Rates of Progress 2021’.Revisit and review – Go through flashcards or allow the children to play a quickfire game to practise something they have learned before and help build their confidence.
