It was what she had been teaching him all along. Hope was the last spark of life. When everything else in you died – when your world has collapsed and your love is gone, along with your humor and your empathy and your understanding; when your beliefs have dried up and your motivation has been depleted and your will has been shattered; when you believe you have absolutely nothing left; when you feel the deep hole in your soul, the emptiness – there lies the smallest of sparks that will start the largest of fires: hope. It was in him still. All this time, he thought it was gone. Annie Marsh ( Cherie Lunghi, 2008) is a hardworking detective from Manchester who is not keen on Frost's methods of cutting corners and bending the rules to get a result. Once, before she and Frost were posted at Denton, she reported him for endangering the life of a young PC and being unprofessional – something he took to heart and still remembers to this day. Terry Reid ( Robert Glenister, 2001–2003) is a tough London detective who has suffered from alcohol and drug addictions. He has often been in trouble for his extreme methods, though he has mellowed by the time he works with Frost. Working together on several cases, Frost and Reid become friends. Frost also learns about an act of bravery by Reid, for which he was awarded the Military Medal. Robinson, Katherine. "Robert Frost: "The Road Not Taken" ". Poetry Foundation . Retrieved 9 August 2016.

Reviews

We enjoyed the the ideas behind this story, the mysterious deaths and coincidences, the ghost story elements were good and creepy, there was plenty to speculate about. Fortunately she decides to return clandestinely to the Hall and manages to confront Lady Barrington and to make the picture complete a disarmed Mrs Jessop. Despite their antipathy towards her, she wins them over, makes them see sense and when the problem is solved declines to remain at the Hall as she wants to return home to look after her mother. DCI Jim Allen (Neil Phillips, 1992–1994), the first DCI to feature in the series. He and Frost get on well, sharing jokes about Mullett and concern for each other's emotions on harrowing cases. They only argue when Frost is taken off a serial rape case. He is mentioned in the second episode of the third series as "being away", but is never seen again. Tilly's heart sinks. Will's at the door of their cottage, daring her to come ice-skating up at Frost Hollow Hall. No one goes near the place these days. Rumour has it that the house is haunted . . . Ten years ago the young heir, Kit Barrington, drowned there in the lake. But Tilly never turns down a dare. In Ireland the series originally aired on RTÉ, but was later dropped by RTÉ in the early 2000s and was not acquired by TV3 Ireland (which was then part owned by ITV, until 2006), however with the introduction of UTV Ireland in 2015 the series made a return and has aired across all Virgin Media channels (formerly TV3) since UTV Ireland's takeover in 2017.WPC Holland (Miranda Pleasence, 1997-1999), attracts Frost's ire during an investigation into an elderly woman murdering her husband. Frost, sympathetic to the elderly woman's plight given the long-term abuse she suffered from her husband, chastises Holland's callous attitude. Holland is also romantically involved with DS Barnard and is devastated by his death in the line of duty. Though Frost allied himself with no literary school or movement, the imagists helped at the start to promote his American reputation. Poetry: A Magazine of Verse published his work before others began to clamor for it. It also published a review by Ezra Pound of the British edition of A Boy’s Will, which Pound said “has the tang of the New Hampshire woods, and it has just this utter sincerity. It is not post-Miltonic or post-Swinburnian or post Kiplonian. This man has the good sense to speak naturally and to paint the thing, the thing as he sees it.” Amy Lowell reviewed North of Boston in the New Republic, and she, too, sang Frost’s praises: “He writes in classic metres in a way to set the teeth of all the poets of the older schools on edge; and he writes in classic metres, and uses inversions and cliches whenever he pleases, those devices so abhorred by the newest generation. He goes his own way, regardless of anyone else’s rules, and the result is a book of unusual power and sincerity.” In these first two volumes, Frost introduced not only his affection for New England themes and his unique blend of traditional meters and colloquialism, but also his use of dramatic monologues and dialogues. “ Mending Wall,” the leading poem in North of Boston, describes the friendly argument between the speaker and his neighbor as they walk along their common wall replacing fallen stones; their differing attitudes toward “boundaries” offer symbolic significance typical of the poems in these early collections. There was a vacancy for a parlour maid, at Frost Hollow Hall, and, though Tilly had no experience and didn’t make the best first impression, she got the job. She was in the right place at the right time, and it seemed that the hall had trouble holding on to staff. Because the village gossip was right: there were ghosts, there were strange goings-on.

At the start of the novel, Tilly works as a ‘pupil-helper’ at her local school, ‘cleaning slates and carrying coal and showing the young ones how to read’. As soon as she becomes fascinated with Kit and how he came to drown, however, she takes up a place as a housemaid at Frost Hollow Hall so that she is able to find out more about him. She believes that she can help him, and bravely tries to do so.PC Ernie Trigg ( Arthur White, 1994–2010), the police archivist. He helps Frost with knowledge of known associates and crime methods he has collected over the years that are not available in the police computer system. He and Frost knew each other long before they were stationed at Denton. West-Running Brook (1928) , Frost’s fifth book of poems, is divided into six sections, one of which is taken up entirely by the title poem. This poem refers to a brook which perversely flows west instead of east to the Atlantic like all other brooks. A comparison is set up between the brook and the poem’s speaker who trusts himself to go by “contraries”; further rebellious elements exemplified by the brook give expression to an eccentric individualism, Frost’s stoic theme of resistance and self-realization. Reviewing the collection in the New York Herald Tribune, Babette Deutsch wrote: “The courage that is bred by a dark sense of Fate, the tenderness that broods over mankind in all its blindness and absurdity, the vision that comes to rest as fully on kitchen smoke and lapsing snow as on mountains and stars—these are his, and in his seemingly casual poetry, he quietly makes them ours.” DCI Charlie Hawkes ( Matthew Marsh, 1995), temporarily replaced DCI Allen. Popular with his subordinates, Hawkes' tenure is marked by his mishandling of the death of a young girl. Hawkes viciously obtains a confession from a local male with Down's Syndrome, but Frost finds the actual killer. Hawkes also inadvertently allows an imposter to pose as a visiting CID officer too.
