Aultmore 12 Year Old is an ex-bourbon matured, unpeated single malt Scotch whisky intended to compete with entry level offerings from Diageo and Chivas. On the surface, it appears to do everything right: it’s age stated, non-chill filtered, of natural color and bottled at 46% ABV. How does it compare to thecompetition? Aultmore 12 Year OldSpecifications: Aultmore flavor profile is very good but it reminds me of another whisky that I am having trouble putting my finger on. I cannot really compare it to anything else, but for some reason I am reminded of the Bruchladdich Laddie, but that is a real stretch. I think my mind is comparing it more to its standalone flavor profile rather than their similarity. The Aultmore 12 Years may be a little light and delicate, but it’s not the average young Speysider. Fresh spring-time nose, lots of apples, with some mineral touches that give it an old-school touch. A must in the entry level. Around € 45.

Aultmore was once found mostly in the blended whiskies of John Dewar & Sons (Dewar's White Label, Dewar's 12 Year Old, Dewar's 18 Year Old). It was rarely enjoyed on its own. Nose (undiluted): this is a classic Speyside, light and floral with some green fruit notes (pears, green apples, green grapes), there's a touch of light, floral vanilla, but it's balanced by a clean (albeit brief) citrus note. Lemon and lime. It's not a bruiser like Laphroaig or Octomore, but it's very well-balanced.

The whisky is 100% malted barley, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, bottled at 46% abv, and the distillery is located in Keith, Banffshire (Speyside region of Scotland). The name Aultmore is derived from the Gaelic word Ant-Allt Mor which means “big burn”. The “big burn” refers to the water source the Auchinderran Burn. A “burn” is a spring or source of water.You are responsible for all activities through your account. Grassy hay, malt, dried fruit and light notes of chocolate, banana bread and tartness with an undertone of citric acid and honey. In 2015, John Dewar & Sons launched the “Last Great Malts” collection in an effort to be more competitive in the growing single malt market. Among the line-up were three Aultmore releases – a 12 year old, a 21 year old travel retail exclusive, and a 25 year old limited release. An 18 year old was introduced at a laterdate. About a year ago at Malt Nuts we tasted a lineup of 12 different Aultmores, all of which came from NDPs, and I feel confident saying this Aultmore 12 Years is a decent representation of the distillery character. It ranks as high or better than 9 of the 12 bottles we tried that evening and it’s hard to ask for more out of an entry level whisky. Aultmore 12 Years isn’t incredibly deep, but what’s there is crisp and punchy from the nose to the palate and through the finish. Being the first official bottling (OB) to come out of Aultmore in a while and I’m glad to see that this new baseline malt is a solid release. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products.

OdysseusUnbound - nice review. Not one on my radar but perhaps one to give a try. Totally agree about the presentation. Finish: Medium length. Slightly drying. Pears and green apples fade, heather and citrus linger. Pepper and spices. Vanilla and woody notes to theforefront. Palate (undiluted): slightly sharp arrival, medium-bodied and creamy, with more pear and green grape notes, there's a hint of cereal (barley) sweetness, but it's subdued and doesn't dominate.
