About this deal

Right Behind You sees the very welcome return of Tom Douglas - I do love a Tom Douglas novel. This is brilliant and tense novel full of mystery, misdirection and mistrust. I really enjoyed it. This is one of my favourite crime series and when Rachel asked if I would like to review Close Your Eyes, there was absolutely no hesitation. This is now the 10th book and if you haven’t read the previous ones, you’ve missed out on a brilliant series but this can easily be read on its own.

I thought I was safe here, but I’m not. I’ve stayed too long. Now Genevieve is dead, and the police are on their way. It’s time for me to go.

If you haven’t read any of these books before, you are in for an absolute treat. All these books work exceptionally well as stand-alones and could be read out of sequence (shudder), but I always like to follow the series in the way the author intended so grab yourself a copy of Only The Innocent and thank me later. With Martha’s chapters told in the first person and the rest of the story in the third, I felt as though I were being drawn in to Martha’s world and as events unfolded I had more questions needing answers. I had various scenarios going around in my head and I was desperate to know if I was right. I liked the story but there were way too many details about things I didn’t care about. I just wanted to get to the point and find Millie. Jo was a brilliant character who I took to immediately. Her increasing panic as she realised things weren’t quite as she had thought was perfectly delivered by the slow unraveling of the secrets that undermine her relationship with Ash and her confusion about why her best friend was so obviously lying to her. Jo felt realistic and her actions matched the personality that was portrayed throughout the narrative, even if I wanted to scream and shout at her not to do half the things she went ahead with! But a mothers determination can’t be shelved when her child is in danger and I knew she would do everything in her power to keep her child safe. Kažkas stebi Džo, laukdamas/a tinkamos progos.

Na, paaiškinkit jūs man, kaip??? Dar vienas neįtikėtinai įtraukiantis trileris, kuris prikaustys nuo pirmų puslapių, ir užmins daug mįslių, į kurias bus sunku surasti atsakymus. It was good to catch up with Tom (sigh!!!!!) and Louisa to find out how their relationship was developing and we get to find out a little more about another family member too. No spoilers here though! It would be unfair to blame the woman I met tonight for turning my life upside down. She didn't. It was already upside down. I just didn't know it. It's a great story with great insight into the psyche of the main characters. A book that will stay with you for some time after you finish reading it. Her first Stephanie King novel, the appropriately titled And So It Begins, came out in 2018. Was it a conscious effort to get away from Tom Douglas?

Recently life has been good for Mallory Hansen: a great job, a lovely home, and a wonderful man, Nathan, to share it with. There is a very important Author's Note at the end. I found the information extremely accurate and it shows Rachel Abbott did her due diligence properly researching the topic. It's cleverly and well thought-out, the police investigation ties in neatly with the revelations about Martha and doubts are cast throughout. The reader is taken on a twisting and turning road to what is a superb and satisfying conclusion to the entire story. Abbott isn't afraid to write about controversial topics - a previous book referenced a pedophile ring; this particular book explores the effects and consequences of cults and it is a hugely intriguing and engaging topic that is sensitively and realistically handled. In Close Your Eyes, the body of the wife of an up and coming businessman is found not far from their home. Her husband has set up a company that is currently developing an app that can accurately predict what will happen in your day. But what is really going on here? When Tom Douglas and his team arrive at the offices, a young woman, Martha Porter, flees, hoping to avoid speaking to the police. But why does she run? Has she got something to do with the murder? And what is the connection between what is happening now and a cult formed twenty-odd years earlier? For the large part of the book Martha is the main protagonist in the story with Douglas and co. more or less bit players but that works well with the mystery. There is a strong thread of coercion and manipulation running through Martha's tale and it is not a comfy read but you don't read novel's like this to be comfy do you?
