About this deal

Raisa heads north, to Iceland; Amon heads south, to Ava'u, a Polynesian island group (where, a century before, the founder of Hopeland began to think about self-selecting families. He said in a 2014 interview, "I didn't want to get stuck doing the same SF books over and over, successful though they may be. A time-traveling, futuristic saga of a family trying to outlast and remake a universe with a power unlike any we've seen before. McDonald's debut novel was Desolation Road (1988), which takes place on a far future Mars in a town that develops around an oasis in the terraformed Martian desert.

His most recent publications are Planesrunner and Be My Enemy, books one and two of the Everness series for younger readers (though older readers will find them a ball of fun, as well). The first hundred pages of Hopeland are a dizzying rush of quirky characters, New Age ideas, crackling Tesla coils, and eccentric families. A few months ago, Tuvalu, population 12,000, became the first country to announce it’s creating a virtual replica of itself in the cloud, so it will still be recognised as a nation when its land is beneath the sea. This techy thriller opens with a desperate heart-pumping race through 20th century London, where the lives of Amon Brightbourne and Raisa Hopeland collide in the midst of anarchy.

A small, heart-warming, and heartfelt coda took me entirely by surprise, even though, in retrospect, I could see it was expertly but subtly foreshadowed.

Hachette Australia acknowledges and pays our respects to the past, present and future Traditional Owners and Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It’s not quite a novel, more like a collection of micro narratives with recurring themes and characters, the whole thing connected together mostly by the passage of time. When you get past that you’re presented with a visceral and dramatic novel about the anthropocene and climate refugees. Tonight (May 30) at 6:30PM, I’m at the NOTTINGHAM Waterstones with my novel Red Team Blues, hosted by Christian Reilly (MMT Podcast). The Brightbourne family hail from an estate somewhere on the isle of Ireland; I wasn’t clear on the precise location, but that may be deliberate, because it only reveals its entrance when someone can show you the way.Raisa is engaged on a sort of parkour selection challenge against the shadowy Finn, the winner to receive a sought-after role in the extended Hopeland clan. HOPELAND is a massive, world-spanning, multi-century-spanning book, that gives the reader HOPE that there's a way forward for humanity.
