About this deal

Other companies with too specific or unfortunate wording have changed their name to better represent what they sell. Mr5oh said:Perhaps, or perhaps they are trying to expand into other market segments? They still make quiet cases as well. Most people looking for the quiet cases should be able to look at this and realize it doesn't have any of those qualities, it's minus the insulation and many of the other things many "quiet" BeQuiet cases have. Niche markets are nice, but in general even if you have die hard fanatic customers, they won't support a company. For cooling, the chassis comes with three 900 RPM Pure Wings 2 fans that use voltage control for regulation (3-pin). Although we’d prefer to see PWM control, at this price point the latter is far from expected. There aren’t many cases in this range that come with three quality fans included as standard, let alone a trio of PWM spinners. The top of the chassis can support up to a 240 mm radiator and the front a 360 mm unit.

But you don't need to be an expert in advertising to realize that naming your company Be Quiet! pigeonholes you into creating a certain kind of product.

The main area inside of the case is left free of obstructions, which makes getting the motherboard into place easier, and it leaves room to install exceedingly large graphics cards (up to 369mm in length). As mentioned, the motherboard area is for ATX-size boards, though of course the case can accept smaller MicroATX or Mini-ITX ones. The front panel also has two RGB LED strips that run vertically down the case. These add some extra flair while not coming off as exceedingly flashy like some competing cases. The default lighting pattern has the lights steadily move downward in a repeating fashion. I can't help but think about the warp engines from Star Trek when I look at these lights, especially after setting them to blue.

According to Be Quiet's Pure Base 500DX spec list, there's room to mount up to five 2.5-inch drives in this case, along with two 3.5-inch drives, with one overlapping bay between the two types. The two 3.5-inch drives get mounted at the bottom of the case in a small removable hard drive cage. As for the 2.5-inch drives, two of these can be mounted directly behind the motherboard mounting tray, and two more can be installed at the front of the case. The fifth 2.5-inch mount is located inside of the hard drive cage, and using it takes up one of the 3.5-inch drive-mounting locations. Inside the Pure Base 500DX, the PSU and 3.5-inch-drive storage mounts are located in a compartment at the bottom of the case. In addition to making the finished system look cleaner, this design also makes building the computer easier in many ways. There is no law saying they can't make loud products, but all of the marketing and advertising thus far has gone into reinforcing that belief. You didn't hear the latest and greatest then. Or atleast not the greatest. The PC market is larger, with plenty of poor examples. But when done right, PCs are hard to beat for silence because of the selection of components available. I have a 2010 MacPro and a PC in a Silverstone FT-02 (a 10 year old case) and the PC is quieter. The Mac has a slight ambient hum from anywhere in the room. The only sound from the PC is air moving, which becomes silent at 3ft. There's also the temp differences... much of the reason Macs run quietly is simply because Apple decided to sacrifice thermals when setting the fan curves. All of the storage mounts in this case require you to screw the drives into place. It would have been more convenient to have a toolless mounting system, but I don't see that as often as I used to on cases these days. Fewer parts means less complexity to make, and presumably lower cost, and I suspect the kind of shopper building into a case like this isn't swapping drives in and out all that often. A (Pure) Base Instinct

The 500DX is also not without limitations. I don't have any complaints about the overall build experience; that went smoothly enough despite twirling a few more screws than usual. But having just two USB ports on the front of the case, only one of which is Type-A, is a problem in my eyes. For as long as I can remember, I've had love of all things tech, spurred on, in part, by a love of gaming. I began working on computers owned by immediate family members and relatives when I was around 10 years old. I've always sought to learn as much as possible about anything PC, leading to a well-rounded grasp on all things tech today. In my role at PCMag, I greatly enjoy the opportunity to share what I know.

The spec sheet also lists support for a fifth 2.5-inch drive. After some digging, we found the spot at the bottom of the hard drive cage under the PSU shroud – though using it will come at the cost of room for the second 3.5-inch drive. Cooling The right-side panel doesn't have any holes for ventilation, but the inside of the panel is padded. This pad is designed to help reduce noise created by vibration, but it's difficult to say exactly how helpful this is. The finished system doesn't seem to be particularly loud, but this has a lot more to do with the cooling hardware you bring to the build than the case itself. For all who strive for maximum performance and especially with water-cooled systems, the Pure Base 500DX with its extremely air-permeable front and top cover is the right choice. The dust filters on the front and bottom are easy to remove for cleaning. Whisper-quiet operation Three preinstalled Pure Wings 2 fans with airflow-optimised fan blades that ensure perfect airflow and cooling. Despite the compact case design the fans at the front, top and rear are 140mm models, resulting in very quiet operation. Up to two 140mm fans can be installed in addition. ARGB light at the front and inside the case

The bulk of the top and front of the 500DX is covered in metal mesh and dust filters to let air in and try and keep dust out...
