About this deal

Wholesome Crossdresser: Indigo for a play that Rose mentions in her blog. Tom tells her that "Sarah won't be able to resist [Indigo in the dress]." I got into the story for Caddy and Michael, though - all conversations very well-rendered in audio form, "MICHAEL, DARLING!" "Don't call Nothing, nothing!" repeated the health visitor, half singing the words, and then in a completely different voice, "Good heavens! What on earth is this?" Once Done, Never Forgotten: Rose remembers David, one of Indigo's former bullies, when he comes asking for help. This shows that Caddy, and therefore the rest of the family, all share Saffron’s loneliness. When the family attends the funeral, there is a moment when Saffron seems contented in a strange way:

This one has a herd of guinea pigs in lieu of Hound, and lots and lots of art as craft and career, which is interesting and in keeping with the overall bohemian feel. And I'm sure it doesn't tell you anything about me that the mother is a crappy cook. Cool Big Sis: Caddy for Indigo and Rose, and Saffron too occasionally. Sarah acts as one for Rose as well, but not Indigo. (It's her Cool Big Sis-ness to Rose that probably first attracted him to her). Nobody seemed to hear at first. Caddy continued painting her hamster's feet. The baby continued screaming. Eve continued explaining to the health visitor (who frightened her very much) that she had not noticed anything at all wrong with Rose until the health visitor pointed it out, and the health visitor continued tut-tutting. Indigo is one of my favourite characters but also Rose. I could go on, but this is getting long so I will stop soon. Saffy's Angel inspired me so much. I loved it; I was in hysterics half the time but sometimes I cried. Anchored Ship: Caddy/Michael as of Forever Rose is a Type 1, and Indigo/Sarah as of Caddy Ever After and Forever Rose also belong to Type 1. Tom/Rose is still up in the air, however, making it a Type 4.Like Brother and Sister: Canon's opinion on the David/Rose pairing, which is hardly ever written in fanfic or thought about. Meaningful Name: All the Casson kids, but Rose especially, as the "Permanent" in her name is a reference to her being a preemie baby, and Eve named her Permanent Rose as a sort of promise - and so that she would be permanent as other people sent her flowers after Rose was born, implying that Rose wouldn't be around long enough for real gifts, so Eve called her Permanent Rose not only after the gorgeous color described in the book, but in the defiant belief that her little daughter would permanently stay with them. How does Rose's trip to the zoo in Forever Rose change her and the circumstances in her life? Is she happy with these changes? Do you think she should have been punished? In Permanent Rose, why does Rose start shoplifting? Does she view this as a bad thing to do? How does she feel about the fact that David is the only person who figures out what she's doing? Describe the problems the character faces and show by what means you are made to feel sympathy for her or him.

The plotting is solid, but it's the characters that make this book such a fantastic read. This is the story of adopted Saffy finding her place in her family, sure, but it's also an introduction to the nice, but nutty, Cassons. Saffy's family members are flawed but also creative and loyal, including mother Eve, who forgets things like dinner, and who is overly permissive because she believes her kids "were in every way more talented, intelligent, and wise than she would ever be."

Early in the book, Saffy realizes that all of the kids in the family have names found on a color chart in the Casson kitchen, except for her. When she presses her mother for an explanation, she learns that she was not named by Eve and Bill, because she is not biologically their child. Rather, Saffy's mother is Eve's deceased sister, and she was adopted into the family after her mother's death. This information really isolates Saffy, and when her grandfather dies and leaves her a mysterious angel in his will, she becomes even more curious about her past. How does the artistic nature of the Casson family affect each of the children? What would their lives be like without art and music? How do the people around them feel about the creativity of the household? Caddy's bed was close enough to touch. Saffy could tell by the feel of the darkness that Caddy was awake. She said, "Caddy, how long ago can you remember?" This shows how Saffron has felt out of place for years, and when she goes to mourn the loss of a relative that her family loves as much as she does, it almost makes her fit in. The last sentence in the paragraph renews your sympathy for Saffron.
