About this deal

Best of all, there has been a lot of laughing. He has made me laugh, made other people laugh, laughed himself, and laughed at himself. “It has made turning 50 a good thing,” he says. “It could have easily gone the other way.” Among the highlights is the natural history gallery at Cliffe Castle, which has a wide range of small mammals and birds. The gallery helps the children to begin to understand how many different animals and birds there are and shows them the skeletons that help support them. It will certainly get them asking questions which is the best way for children to learn. We also helped crowd source the list of activities from a broad range of practitioners within the Trust.

Charmouth Heritage Coast Centresits on the beach at Charmouth and has ample (and reasonably priced) parking close by (and a café below it!). The centre offers a small exhibition as well as advice and resources to support fossil hunting. It also offers the opportunity to sign up to a fossil hunting session run by resident Palaeontologist Phil. Bradford Industrial Museum is a great place to take children with a wide range of SEN. You could start by calling the museum and asking when a quiet time to visit would be. There are lots of things to look at, smell and touch and for a lot of children the old cars, trains and trams are incredibly exciting! Often transport can be a huge motivator for children with Autism.

Implementation

Helpfully and easily found regularly my neighbours pond! No33 Catching a Falling Leaf –50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 Now I guess it depends on what you regard as long but for mine at the moment 8 miles is about the maximum but I think this is pretty good for little ones! We get the 5 bikes around with a combination of carriers from Thule.

Other museums will give children the opportunity to develop their awareness of the past, and how things have changed over time. The Science and Media Museum has galleries to explore technology, including Wonderlab where what you see and hear is only the beginning. I don’t think my kids can say they can ride a horse but they have definitely tried! No49 Find a geocache – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 On holiday, take a photo of 10 strangers (with their permission). Try to get a little story or snippet to go with each. Now I’m not sure I even knew this was a thing! One for this Summer! No 18 Create some Wild Art–50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 We’ve loved this in a lot of places but one of the most special places we will probably ever remember star gazing is on Domwe Island in Malawi. No pictures of actual starts but you can imagine how clear it was!We went through quite a phase of doing this and it’s definitely a great free activity. No50 Canoe down a river – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 We play this anytime we see a bridge now but we first experienced it, I think, at Lantern and Larks in Lancashire on a fab weekend break. Buy an item of clothing from a charity shop that you really like, but isn’t the sort of thing you normally wear. Wear it. Always – no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes. Here we all are on our walk from Ilam Park to Dovedale Stepping Stones | National Trust I’m going to say that we haven’t done this enough and that it should still be on the list! No36 Make a home for a wild animal– 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4

There are some challenges here for this Summer! No15 Play in the Snow– 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 Another of my favourite photos from a photoshoot behind our house but definitely catching a falling leaf! We love heading down to West Kirby beach nearby where we live and flying a kite. One of our favourites things to do. No8 Catch a Fish with a Net–50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 I feel like there needs to be a trip designed around this task this year. No44 Go Bird Watching– 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 A safari at night yes, but I don’t think we’ve done a nature walk. No41 Plant it, Grow it, Eat it – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4Sadly I don’t actually have the photographic evidence but there was a lot of rolling down this hill when we spent the weekend at Timber Festival in 2018. We don’t seem to have managed this ourselves so still on the list, but we do have some great tips from another writer aboutFossil Hunting on Charmouth Beach. The Fifty Things link is here and below are the ones we have managed so far. So why not get started yourself – loads of them can be done for free! No1 Climb a Tree –50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4 Today’s children spend 60% less time outside than their parents did at the same age and are more likely to be admitted to hospital for falling out of bed than out of a tree.
