About this deal

VanderMeer’s first foray into Area X is a beautiful, subtle and incredibly atmospheric read which resonates with a sense of the unknown and the unknowable. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition. Unnerved, I stepped back even farther, borrowing some of the surveyor’s best curses, but only in my head. Any other evaluation depended on environmental and biological factors about which I was increasingly convinced I had inadequate data.

If you like your science fantasy subtle and eerie, and wish to venture into the unknown, then Annihilation might just be the book for you. When you emerge from the structure, any time you see a bird in flight it will trigger a strong feeling that you are doing the right thing , that you are in the right place . A religious or superstitious person, someone who believed in angels or in demons, might see it differently.

But as we climbed back up, I had a moment of vertigo despite being in such an enclosed space, a kind of panic for a moment, in which the walls suddenly had a fleshy aspect to them, as if we traveled inside of the gullet of a beast. As for the psychologist, we knew the least about her, but I think we all believed she came from some kind of management background. Starting at due north, a rectangular opening set into the surface of the block revealed stairs spiraling down into darkness. Why do we see as strengths those things that are actually now weaknesses in ourselves as a sustainable species on Earth?

Would definitely recommend for fans of scifi, distopia and forward thinking novels and for those who have seen the film which sadly does no service to such a good book. But there it was, surrounded by a fringe of scrub grass, half-hidden by fallen moss off to the left of the trail: a circular block of some grayish stone seeming to mix cement and ground-up seashells. We are less than 200 pages in to the Southern Reach Trilogy by the end of this first volume, and already home is a distant memory, and an unreliable one, too: for who's to say that home was not always X at heart? So when I “woke up” with the others, it was in full gear, including heavy hiking boots, with the weight of forty-pound backpacks and a multitude of additional supplies hanging from our belts. Our mission was simple: to continue the government’s investigation into the mysteries of Area X, slowly working our way out from base camp. The Crawler is a rapidly shapeshifting entity of blinding lights and shattering noises, which paralyzes the biologist in an agonizing loop of losing and regaining consciousness. This is something we've forgotten over the last centuries, and the farther we get away from understanding this, the farther we get from long-term solutions to questions like.

The beauty of it cannot be understood, either, and when you see beauty in desolation it changes something inside you. There was no time for the psychologist to prepare any hypnotic suggestion designed to keep us focused and in control; in fact, all she could offer was “Don’t get close to it! Nothing about its muzzle or broad, long face looked at all extraordinary, and yet I had the startling impression of some presence in the way its gaze seemed turned inward and its head willfully pulled to the left as if there were an invisible bridle. I had the sense that they now saw the world through a kind of veil, that they spoke to their interviewers from across a vast distance in time and space.
