About this deal

This super poster has never been folded and is in fantastic condition. Being double-sided, it is suitable for display in Art of the Movies Light Box or traditional framing. Either way, this is a classic piece of British rom-com history! There are so many ultra-adorable places where getting a coffee is a true excursion rather than a pitstop – not to mention the fact that they do a stellar breakfast and brunch trade too. Teachers may prefer to use any of the original sources here to create their own resources and activities or adapt the activities provided here for use in their schemes of work. In fact, it’s so old that it was designed for silent films, with no sound facilities. Imagine the refurb that was required once “talkies” were invented some two decades later! And it obviously wouldn’t be an English village without a farmer’s market on a Sunday, right? Enter the Notting Hill Gate market – a weekly farmer’s market just a stone’s throw from the tube stop.

The documents used in these lessons cover sensitive subjects and may include language and concepts that are entirely unacceptable and inappropriate today. We suggest that teachers look at the material carefully before introducing to pupils. It would be helpful to discuss the language and ideas contained in a source beforehand. Notting Hill Carnival is a spectacular celebration of Caribbean culture in London, with all the music, costumes and food you’d expect. Menuhin, probably the most famous violinist of the 20th century, founded two music schools and mentored young musicians. His plaque will be at the Belgravia house in central London where he lived, worked, entertained and practised yoga for the last 16 years of his life. He died in 1999.If you get the chance, attending Notting Hill Carnival is definitely one of the best things to do in Notting Hill. Fact. In keeping with Notting Hill’s oh-so-charming character, the inside of this pub is quirky and opulent. A charming fireplace, as well as a historic Grade II listed bar, are particular highlights. I love the charming Farm Girl (don’t let your coffee go cold as you admire the decor), while another fave is Biscuiteers with its impossibly photogenic exterior.

Ask pupils to design a poster to promote the Notting Hill Carnival today. Include information about its beginnings and why it’s such an important event for people.Work in pairs/small groups to research and design your own illustrated Fact File about Claudia Jones and her role in establishing the Notting Hill Carnival. The wine list is impressive, while there are plenty of local and international beers and a generous gin selection. Bottoms up! Notting Hill Gate Farmers Market The pub serves up classic British pub fare, with fresh local ingredients. Their burger is delish, while their “wine platter” lives up to all expectations. Building on this approach, the p upils study t hree further sources which encourage them to think about why the Notting Hill Carnival was started and why it is still such an important event today . They look at the passenger list from Empire Windrush to learn about Sam Beaver King, one of the early founders of the Notting Hill Carnival and West Indian Gaze tte. Pupils then go on to learn about Claudia Jones. Use the photograph of Claudia Jones ( founder and editor of ‘The West Indian Gazette and Afro-Caribbean News ’ and founder of the indoor Caribbean Carnival which is seen as the beginnings of the Notting Hill Carnival) as a ‘Mystery Document’ with the class. Ask pupils to look at the photograph and then answer the questions. They can then go on to study the Caribbean Carnival Souvenir Programme fr o m 1960, a vailable at the British Library: Claudia Jones’ Caribbean Carnival Souvenir programme, 1960 | The British Library (bl.uk) . This reveals more about the event and its significance. This source can also be used to emphasise the importance of different archives and collections for historians . Plenary: Which, now we read it, looks cheesier in print than we thought it was when we heard it uttered by Julia.

Please access at: Claudia Jones’ Caribbean Carnival Souvenir programme, 1960 | The British Library (bl.uk) You’ll find lots of fresh fruit and veg, as well as fresh flowers and herbs and spices. Our fave, though, is the honey from Bee Friendly. Take a Stroll Through Kensal Green Cemetery Have you ever looked at the bright, loud and joyous celebration that is Carnival and dreamed of attending? A snap or two is fine, but do bear in mind that these are people’s homes before you start hanging off the doors and rampaging around in pursuit of the perfect (but in all honesty, cookie cutter) photo.

Looking for More Notting Hill Guides?

Ask the class to create a mini-exhibition looking at the contribution made by migrants from the new Commonwealth countries to Britain (e.g. contributions to the NHS, British transport, art, music, politics.) This could include information about individuals such as Sam King and Mona Baptiste. It’s quite the mecca for fans of the sport, and also functions as a not-for-profit to help grow skateboarding and provide an outlet for local kids and residents. With opulent Gothic monuments and tombs set amongst an overgrown garden, it’s a beautiful and interesting place to stroll through. You can also get a direct bus from nearby Westfield shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush or from Hyde Park. Not all of Notting Hill’s bookstores have quite the same claim to fame, but if you want to avoid avid fans snapping away, there are other options. Book and Kitchen combine two of our fave things – the hint is in the name – so it’s a definite must-see in Notting Hill, London in our eyes. Pop into the Museum of Brands
