Providence". Comic Book Roundup. Archived from the original on October 28, 2016 . Retrieved February 22, 2016. In addition to this, Whipple Van Buren Philipps, Lovecraft's grandfather and Winfield Scott Lovecraft, his father are members of the Stella Sapiente. Faux Affably Evil: The Dagon cultists. While they initially appear to be just eccentric folk with weird fetishes who enjoy secret orgies (and who grin too much), they ultimately come off as more repugnant than the Mythos beings the protagonists meet.

Sure the FBI agents are dumb and annoying, but that doesn't make the plot of this comic any less interesting. Meta Origin: Nearly all the supernatural characters depicted are shown to be influenced by Hali's Book (the expy of the Necronomicon), either following its instructions on immortality or attempting to enact its prophecy. Decon-Recon Switch: It's ultimately stressed that colored by the prejudices of those that tell it, Cosmic Horror is still Cosmic Horror, and it takes no prisoners regardless of one's views or supposed level of righteousness. Shadrach Annesley very clearly has a sensual interest in other men, but it's unclear how much of that is sexual and how much is simply due to being a cannibal (of course, looking at Real Life cannibals such as Jeffrey Dahmer and Armin Meiwes suggests a significant amount of overlap between the two).Verbal Tic: Ronald Underwood Pitman says "uhm" just about every sentence, and slightly more when he is lying.

The Necronomicon, also referred to as the Book of the Dead, or under a purported original Arabic title of Kitab al-Azif, is a fictional grimoire (textbook of magic) appearing in stories by the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft and his followers. It was first mentioned in Lovecraft's 1924 short story " The Hound", [1] written in 1922, though its purported author, the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, had been quoted a year earlier in Lovecraft's " The Nameless City". [2] Among other things, the work contains an account of the Old Ones, their history, and the means for summoning them. Mental Time Travel: Lovecraft's writings and other Cthulhu Mythos stories and visions of Eldritch Abominations are actually a result of four-dimensional "echoes" of powerful, highly evolved beings from Earth's distant future.

Secret Society Group Picture: A picture of the Stella Saps was taken by Ronald Underwood Pitman. Pitman notes that he was chosen by the group because he was a man of discretion (presumably because he had something to hide himself). The people in the photo are Garland and Leticia Wheatley (as a young girl), Edgar Wade, Henry Anneseley and at the center of the picture, Van Buren (aka Whipple Van Buren Phillips, Lovecraft's maternal grandfather who helped raise him) and next to him, a travelling salesman with an English accent identified by Pitman as "Winston something" (he is in fact Winfield Scott Lovecraft, HP's Dad). Leticia Wheatley, like many people with Downs' Syndrome, is quite pudgy. She's also a platinum-haired beauty with a soft, girlish face. King George actually denies being a cannibal, pointing out that if he ate his brother "George Washington", that WOULD be bad (and cannibalism). Eating dead humans, however, isn't cannibalism, because ghouls aren't human. Bowdlerize: While the series doesn't shy away from discussing Lovecraft's infamous racial hang-ups, as is often the case with Lovecraft adaptations, the Deep One's design has been altered to conform to modern sensibilities. While the originals were described as flabby-lipped and bulgy-eyed, invoking comparisons to golliwog caricatures, the Deep One here is drawn with a lipless, sunken-eyed visage, looking like nothing so much as a humanoid coelacanth ( which, you have to admit, looks a whole lot cooler).

Immortal Procreation Clause: Male Deep One hybrids have their penises ritualistically removed when they complete their transformation into their final, immortal Fish Person form. The Oannes church pamphlet also mentions that it was once common for them to remove it themselves after mating only once and leave it inside their mates to prevent others from mating with her but this practice has fallen out of favor. Lovecraft was often asked about the veracity of the Necronomicon, and always answered that it was completely his invention. In a letter to Willis Conover, Lovecraft elaborated upon his typical answer: Webb, Charles (1 July 2010). "Jacen Burrows: Neonomicon Rises – A Lovecraftian Tale". Comics Bulletin. Archived from the original on 10 September 2010 . Retrieved 22 March 2011.

Dissonant Serenity: Brears comments that the Fetus Terrible is probably controlling her mind in some way, given that she's not freaked out about it. Is this a bleak, unbearable way to end the “reread” portion of “The Great Alan Moore Reread”? Probably. But it’s all we have. Until next time!

Bigger Is Better in Bed: Played With. The Dagon cultists react positively to the size of the Deep One's penis, but Brears finds it painful after a while. Lawrence Talbot, a werewolf, has just set up shop in the dark, mysterious town of Innsmouth. He soon hears that the end of the world is supposedly nigh and the tool that’s going to bring it about is the blood of a werewolf. Much of the criticism this comic has received is on its art, which some say doesn't do the original story justice. This comic’s story is actually pretty short, and a decent chunk of it is sketches illustrating how the comic came to be. NEXT TIME: A reflection on the Alan Moore legacy. And, in two weeks, I conclude the Great Alan Moore Reread with my All-Time Alan Moore Top Ten list.

Alien Geometries: The Plateau of Leng definitely qualifies. R'lyeh is actually Agent Brears's womb. Her daughter had borrowed the book from the adult section of the library, using an adult card, according to WSPA. A committee then voted to keep the book on shelves, WSPA reported, but their decision has been overruled by the library’s executive director Beverly James, who “did not feel the book’s content was appropriate for the library system’s collection”.
