The world building is great, the characters are interesting and relatable and the humor is silly and nice (or foolish I guess). He sniffed the air near the eggs as he bent: a nasty stench confirmed his suspicions from early this morning. By now, he could feel the staff’s energies beginning to wane, but he wouldn’t need them for much longer. The only downside to this series is that the next book, 5, isn't written yet and at the end of this book, you are left wondering a bit about what will happen next.

Overall still really enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next but it’s my least favourite so far. On the whole I enjoyed the book immensely: characterisation still shines, I still enjoy the slower elements and the story is continuing to develop interesting elements.The story literally died right there, and got swapped out for a shapeless slice-of-life tedium of magic system exposition, that I really didn't care for. Alex looked around in confusion as she led him toward the common room where he could hear banging and frantic movement. Believable characters are not so 1 dimensional, they change over time and hopefully grow for the better. Then Hannah’s power was with him, pushing against Kaz-Mowang’s with a vengeance that Alex could only describe as personal. Ultimately, I'm glad I read it, but also glad I skimmed past the several chapters worth of the main character's thoughts and feelings which leant little if anything to the story.

The author is really good at witty dialogue and weaving creative problem solving into the narrative. With a torrent of energy like a bursting dam, it shattered both the demon’s will and his resistance to magic, flashing out to wrap around the massive form. The middle aged woman looking as though she was about to break into tears of relief, grabbed him tightly against her lean form in a hug. The expedition is underway---and between setting up a base in Thameland and clearing out the monsters and dungeons in their way, Alex has one more hurdle.
