Since we’ve discovered that Letters-Leo is a murderer, and Book-Leo was inspired by Letters-Leo, it’s not an entirely comfortable ending. This one kept me on my toes as there are many characters and of course, there is the book within a book. He is aware of protests in the United States over the killing of unarmed Black people in police custody and even the idea of unconscious bias, but he feels tricked by Hannah’s failure to include defined racial markers. I will admit it took me a while to get into the swaps back and forth, between the correspondence and the book draft and the secondary book draft. To be honest there wasn’t anything that I really liked…I quite enjoyed the Australian vs American English words, that was fun.There was so much meandering of the characters going about their lives and hanging out, the whole book just felt disorganised and disjointed. There is an abrupt shift in her character when she falls in love with Cain and commits to tracking down the person responsible for the crimes occurring around the four friends.

In her story, four strangers are sharing a table at the Boston Public Library when they hear the terrified scream of a woman elsewhere in the building. In all, Gentill did a great job of juggling the novel within the novel, the characters that inspired the fictional ones, the letters to Hannah subplot.

But I enjoyed the tangled plot and characters and setting (my mom was from Fall River just outside Boston so I have a fondness for the region, having spent lots of time there growing up).
