About this deal

Grace will become Millie’s guardian when Millie graduates from high school in the next year; Jack understands that he will have to be a part of Millie’s life.

Jack swept Grace into a whirlwind romance, promised her not only the home of her dreams but also the opportunity to quit her job and have her sister (who was born with Down’s Syndrome) move in with them rather than live at her special school, and so the two were married in just six months. By shifting between the revelatory rather than romantic honeymoon and Grace’s life in the present, when Jack keeps her locked in their beautiful Spring Eaton home, Paris underscores Grace’s seemingly unassailable predicament, especially with Millie soon coming to live with the couple. In "Behind Closed Doors" -- you can see for yourself by the quote above -how furious an animal lover might be. She is in a special school where she lives but she's supposed to go and live with Jack and Grace after she turns eighteen.

And now maybe all that was left was to see how it was all to be resolved – except I’m less than half way through! As Diane expresses her amazement, Jack smiles at me from the other end of the table and tells everyone that I am very clever indeed. And later I felt empathy for Grace's growing confusion and horror at Jack's 360° character change following their marriage, even though we got a hint of this early on.

Now -- we, the readers know Jack isn't PERFECT, so we are excited -- on the edge turning pages to find out 'where-the-holes are'. She glances at Jack and I know she's wondering how someone so good-looking managed to stay unattached for so long. I felt that this thriller was like so many others I have read, and I guess what was going to happen way before the information was reveal. This is like…you know when you stumble upon some awful movie on The Hallmark channel because someone—not you—left it on, and then you go to change the channel yet somehow end up watching the entire thing?I can't remember the last time a book made me feel such an all-consuming, visceral hatred for a character. I watch, momentarily distracted, as a tiny splash of champagne misses the glass and lands on the knee of his pristine chinos. Maybe people just need mental junk food now and then, and it’s better to have junk food that’s well put together—think a Snickers bar—than junk food that’s just bad—think gummy worms.
