About this deal

edition is here, and with it a whole raft of changes to the factions of Warhammer 40,000. With the Munitorum Field Manual out in the wild and the Faction FAQs released, now’s a good time to start taking a look at what’s changed for all of our favorite armies. Today, Robert “TheChirurgeon” Jones is talking about Chaos Daemons. Blast weapons represent a huge problem for horde strategies in 9th edition, giving said weapons a minimum of 3 shots against units of 6-10 models and maximum shots against units of 11+ models. This is a real issue for large units of Daemon Troops, where having 20+ models is where you start to get good bonuses. The net impact is that you’ll need a way to protect daemons more from being shot and you’ll likely want to take a harder look at Daemons units that don’t come in massive blobs. Vehicles, Monsters, and Shooting Since the failure of the Heresy, Typhus has followed his own path. Mortarion’s stronghold within the Eye of Terror disgusts him as sentimental, for Mortarion has sculpted the Plague Planet in mimicry of lost Barbarus.

HS: Plagueburst Crawler [8 PL, 160pts, -1CP]: 2x Entropy cannon, Heavy slugger, Accelerated Entropy (-1 CP)

Outlook: Decent

Don: I actually like Infernal Jealousy and wish they made it one Daemon Prince per army. I am in the camp of loving the Malignant Plaguecaster though. I can not remember putting more than one Lord of the Death Guard per Detachment anyways. It should make lists more interesting, I think.

Wargear Tweaks. A lot of weapon profiles were tweaked, to the point that I’m pretty sure we’ll get an FAQ updating profiles for Thousand Sons and Chaos Space Marines and Daemons soon, which will probably not be so great for those factions. Also there are a few melee weapons that went down by 1 Strength that won’t feel it if you’re running mono-Death Guard. Chaos Lord • Exalted Champion • Chaos Champion • Aspiring Champion • Sorcerer Lord • Daemon Prince • Daemon Prince of Nurgle • Daemon Prince of Tzeentch • Death Guard LordWith their victims selected, the Biologus Putrifiers strike. They fire their Injector Pistols into vulnerable spots such as exposed flesh, chinks in armour and eyelenses before squeezing a concentrated dose of foulness into the target's body. The results are rarely less than spectacular, with victims erupting in explosive boils, liquefying into screaming sludge, vomiting billowing clouds of flies, and countless other revolting -- and mercifully lethal -- Oh man, I almost forgot to add the Tallyman! For 70 points he’s a bargain. And we’re just now at 1599. What else do we need now. Well, we have a lot of bodies on the tabletop and some firepower with the Plagueburst Crawlers. We’re great at holding an objective but pushing into enemy territory is going to be a challenge. Especially as this army isn’t particularly fast. There are a few things you’ll notice looking at units in the book that apply to multiple units in different slots:

Now you got them within 6″ of the badguys – you will spend 2 command points on these two stratagems: Another previewed rule in Warhammer Community, Contagions are rules that affect enemy models or units within a certain range, and the range expands as the game goes on. If those sound like Auras to you well, they should be but the rules explicitly state that they aren’t and are not affected by rules that affect Auras. Contagion ranges start at 1” on turn 1 and go up each turn after that, to 3” on turn 2, 6” on turn 3, and 9” on turns 4+, and some units (like Mortarion) get to treat their Contagion ranges as being turn 4+ all the time. There are multiple Contagion abilities – each Plague Company Warlord Trait is a special Contagion – and several ways to boost their range. Wings: That’s a good point, and means you probably will see one unit in lists here and there, as there’s not really anything else that can fulfil that role in a pure list.No Mercy, No Respite secondaries are probably going to make more sense with a Nurgle-heavy army where Grind Them Down can benefit large plaguebearer squads that are hard to remove, or large units of Horrors that can split models and be a chore to grind through, making it likely you can score points for Grind Them Down on a smaller number of kills. Your game plan already relies on killing more units than your opponent most games, anyways. Thin Their Ranks isn’t liable to be something you’ll look at and is really more something you want to make sure you’re not giving up inadvertently – taking 90 pink horrors with splitting is going to make this one a no-brainer against you. While We Stand, We Fight isn’t likely to be a good play, since it’s most often going to double-reward an opponent for killing your greater daemons. Both will add anti-tank firepower; the Crawler is slow, durable, carries a huge plague mortar that can target units out of line of sight, and has the option for sponson-mounted Entropy cannons, while the Blighthauler is fast, comparatively fragile, and happiest when it follows up a salvo of missiles and melta-fire by charging into enemy lines.

It’s time to put this into practice. Let’s build some daemons lists we can start playing with. Slaanesh and Nurgle As the Horus Heresy approached, however, curdled pride turned the legion away from the Imperial cause, and towards darker ends. Captain Calas Typhon seeded secretive lodges within the legion, creating a secret society that was more loyal to the legion than to the Imperium, while the Primarch Mortarion nursed his own old grudges against the Emperor. Mortarion was among the first to declare his fealty for Horus when the Warmaster dragged the Imperium into civil war.Mortarion: He’s just so good, and is going to be one of the most enjoyable models in the game to throw down with. HQ: Lord of Change, Exalted: Random, Relic: The Impossible Robe, Powers: Infernal Gateway, Gaze of Fate, Treason of Tzeentch, Warlord: Born of Sorcery Use a fine brush to paint smaller details such as the face, belt, and other intricate elements. This step requires steady hands and attention to detail. Choose contrasting colors for these details to make them stand out. For example, you can add small symbols with colors like Mephiston Red or Yriel Yellow, or paint the guns and metallic details with Brass Scorpion.
