Whether hungry caterpillars that munched their way to becoming butterflies or roosters off to see the world, Carle created all sorts of brightly colored characters and creatures who have helped generations of children learn to read. A celebrated children’s books illustrator, Eric Carle created joyous visions of the natural world, from anthropomorphic animals to vibrant flowers. He painted tissue paper and cut it into shapes for a living, and inspired an entire world by doing so. Eric Carle’s children’s books and illustrations are a delight to read to children and also a wonderful inspiration so many art projects- who doesn’t love painted paper collages?

In the past, I used white tissue paper just like Eric Carle but it tore so easily and was difficult for some students. This project gives the students the opportunity to prepare their own papers, engaging in painting and decorating paper, cutting, gluing and creating an image involving shapes. The book also contains an insightful autobiography illustrated with personal photographs, an anecdotal essay by his longtime editor, a photographic essay on how Carle creates his collages, and writings by Carle and his colleagues. Although I never met the man personally, you could feel his spirit in every crevice of the building. It is one of my favorite projects because success is high and students are happy with the process AND product. It’s not necessarily a parent or guardian’s fault, but if parents or other adults take the time to listen to what children have to say, whether they are doing an art project or talking about their day at school, they are exercising one of the fundamental forms of communication, which is storytelling. The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb," illustration for Tikvah: Children's Book Creators Reflect on Human Rights (New York: SeaStar Books, 1999) p 7. He illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote, and more than 145 million copies of his books have been sold around the world. But instead, we discussed all the other materials on the table, and what else he could use to make his vision come to life. Eric Carle Eric Carle is the author and illustrator of over seventy picture books for young children.

Collage art is created by cutting different pieces of paper into different shapes and creating a picture out of it. Y., and his childhood in wartime Germany, this autobiography gives readers a glimpse at what shaped the artist's life, including essays on his work by his editors, a speech for the Library of Congress, and more than sixty full-color illustrations. Common themes in his light, simple books are friendship, change, and the challenge of finding your way in the world. Carle's tools were fairly simple: acrylic paint, white tissue paper, a sponge or something else to make a little texture, tracing paper, and an X-Acto knife.Carefully overlaying the pieces to create his illustration, he'd use wallpaper paste to hold the collage in place. Patricia Morrison McDonald was the sister of Barbara Carle, and an enthusiastic supporter of the work of Eric Carle. Suddenly, he went from a glum mood, to talking a million miles a minute about the vision he had in mind for a tree.
