About this deal

There are two distinct styles of true wireless earbuds. One-size-fits-all buds like the Apple AirPods give you no flexibility in terms of fit – their earpieces either sit snuggly in your ears or feel loose when worn. They’re the best choice if you want to leave your ear canals free but they provide little, if any, sound isolation. Key specs – Built-in microphone and music control buttons: Yes; Battery life: 32 hours; Connections: Bluetooth 5.1; Weight: 6.2g per earbud, 45.1g charging case; IP rating: IP55 Key specs – Built-in microphone and music control buttons: Yes; Battery life: 32 hours; Connections: Bluetooth 5.1; Weight: 3.7g per earbud, 27.5g charging case; IP rating: IPX4 The buds themselves offer a comfortable and stable fit, and each can be worn independently. The Go Air POP are rated IPX4 for water resistance, so they’ll hold up well against rain and sweat, and the 32-hour battery life including the charging case is plenty for most users. They do omit a couple of helpful features – active noise cancellation and control customisation – but access to an impactful graphic equaliser in the Sony Headphones Connect companion app allows you to tune audio to your tastes, which is very welcome. The WF-C500 will also prove a popular choice for those who aren’t fans of touch controls, as they use depressible buttons that take away any guesswork from controlling them.

Best wireless earbuds 2023: Our favourite budget and premium

Despite those minor grumbles, the QC Earbuds II are a superb pair of wireless earbuds, and class-leading when it comes to their ability to reduce the impact of external distractions. The Signature setting enhances vocals and bass, while Bass Boost amplifies low-end frequencies and will be the go-to for bass lovers. For something somewhere in between, you can opt for Balanced mode, which delivers the most even sound across the frequency curve.Sound quality is highly impressive, too. The Fit Pro have a weightier bass response than their stablemates the Studio Buds and there’s less harshness in the treble frequencies. Like most Beats headphones, the Fit Pro play particularly nicely with Apple devices. They house the company’s H1 chip and this enables a range of useful features, including shared listening with other Beats users, hands-free Siri and full spatial audio support. They don’t beat the Bose QC Earbuds for ANC or the Sony WF-1000XM4 for smarts and sound quality, but the Momentum True Wireless 3 are right up there with the best wireless earbuds on the market. The Free Pro 2 are among the lightest ANC earbuds on the market and sit extremely comfortably in your ears. EarFun includes a range of eartips and wingtips to help you achieve a great fit and once in, they will remain in your ears no matter what you’re up to. Audio-wise, the Free Pro 2 sound very similar to their predecessors: bass reproduction is their strongest suit but there’s also decent detail in the mid-range. The noise cancellation on offer isn’t going to win any awards for how well it attenuates sound but that shouldn’t come as a surprise given how cheap the T3 are. It’s reasonable for the money, however, and will reduce the impact of low-end frequencies to a certain extent. With ANC off, the T3 deliver up to 24 hours of battery life, which is perfectly acceptable by modern true wireless earbuds standards. IP certification: This denotes the earbuds’ ability to resist the ingress of dust and sweat/water, with the two digits after “IP” referring to each, respectively. IPX4, for example, means that the buds aren’t dust resistant, as shown by the “X”, but are resistant to splashing water, as shown by the “4”. These buds would therefore not be ideal for taking to the beach, where wayward sand is prone to get everywhere, but are fine for jogging or a trip to the gym, and they can withstand the UK’s wet weather.

Despite squeezing in all of that functionality, they’re among the smallest earbuds out there, trading in an AirPods Pro-inspired aesthetic for more discreet drums. This compact housing doesn’t hinder audio quality, however, with the 10mm dynamic drivers producing powerful sound underpinned by a particularly weighty low-end response. If the standard tuning isn’t to your liking, the 1MORE app offers 12 EQ presets, including Bass Booster, Podcast and Hip-Hop. Active noise cancellation is more effective than it was on the Momentum True Wireless 3’s predecessor and Sennheiser has introduced a clever new feature whereby you can have the buds switch noise-cancelling and sound modes when you move between certain locations. Sound quality – always a strong point of Sennheiser headphones – is excellent and there are a number of ways of tweaking it via the revamped Smart Control companion app. On the audio front, the Flybuds 3 make their presence known with surprisingly strong audio quality. There’s a pleasing weight to bass, and vocals are articulated with impressive clarity. Comfort is subjective, but rest assured that our reviewers have worn the buds being tested for hours at a time and in all manner of situations, be that in a quiet room at home, running in the gym or on a busy commute. This ensures we’re able to give an informed opinion on how comfortable they are to wear, how secure the fit is and how well they withstand rain and sweat. They’re a solid buy for those without a Huawei handset too, you’ll just be missing out on a few Huawei-exclusive bonuses like “identify song” – a Shazam-like feature for finding out the name of unrecognisable tunes – and the ability to use double taps on the buds to take photos.

Sound quality may still lag behind premium options, while advanced features such as active noise cancellation and in-ear detection are often omitted, but those are sacrifices worth making if you’re looking to save yourself some cash. Bluetooth Multipoint: This allows earbuds to remain connected to more than one source simultaneously and is particularly useful if you regularly switch between using your buds with your laptop, tablet and phone. Active noise cancellation is tested in various real-world scenarios that reflect common use cases such as tube journeys, walks through crowded urban areas and days in the office. We conduct side-by-side comparisons with similarly priced earbuds to assess performance and will always try out every feature a pair of buds has in its arsenal. These include microphone quality – tested during phone calls, conference calls over platforms like Google Meet and by recording voice clips – and the functionality of a companion app where available.

A significant proportion of buds now favour the use of silicone tips, which seal off your ear canals and secure the buds in your ears far better. They also have the advantage of providing improved passive noise cancellation. Manufacturers typically provide a range of different-sized tips to help ensure you get the most comfortable and stable fit possible. Our keen-eared reviewers listen to a huge variety of musical genres from a range of sources during testing, including Spotify, Tidal and locally stored audio files. We’ll also put earbuds through their paces across whichever Bluetooth codecs they support using a compatible device and feed them high-resolution content if they have Hi-res capabilities. Touch controls are employed strategically to maximise functionality – adjusting volume, for instance, is achieved by sliding a finger up or down either earbud rather than using double or triple taps. Rounding out an impressive list of features are effective wear detection and active noise cancellation. The latter, in particular, is very good for the price and puts a significant dent in external sound.
