It comes from the coat of arms of the de Birmingham family, who first established the area as a market town in the 12th century. It was adopted after a public competition in 2015, and was designed by 10 year old Thomas Keogh and David Smith. Arms: Quarterly first and fourth Azure a Bend of five Lozenges Or second and third per pale indented of the last and Gules over all a fesse Ermine thereon a mural crown of the second. Overall, the colours and arrangement are also a nod to Birmingham City Council’s banner flag and the historic arms of the de Birmingham family.
