About this deal

At that time over ten percent of Boddingtons production was exported to some 40 countries worldwide, including China, the United States, Taiwan and the West Indies. It is renowned for its golden color, full-bodied flavour and malty, morish taste with smooth, tight creamy head.

Whitbread was motivated to plug a gap in its portfolio by owning a credible national cask ale brand. In 1971, Allied Breweries sold its 35 per cent stake in the company, leaving Whitbread 25 per cent and the Boddington family 10 per cent, with the remainder of company shares held by small shareholders in the Manchester area.

There are generally acknowledged to be three reasons why a pub is deleted from the GBG: when a tenant/manager changes; when a pub closes; and when the beer quality is perceived to have fallen. Then there seems to be a period of inconsistency from an attenuation POV at least - 81%, 93%, 81%, 76% ! In July 2011 AB InBev's UK president Stuart MacFarlane claimed "We still believe in the brand" whilst admitting to not advertising the brand for five years, instead reaping the rewards of memories of earlier advertising. Boddingtons has been enjoyed by beer drinkers in England for more than 200 years, and is well known for its creamy head and smooth body. Whitbread transformed the brand from regional to national, expanding production from 200,000 to 850,000 barrels a year between 1989 and 1995.

Boddingtons has a distinctive straw-golden coloured body with a creamy white head, which in its modern form is achieved by the addition of nitrogen in an attempt to replicate the traditional head from serving the cask beer through a sparkler.Ends rather neutral and watery, with plaster-like effects overruling any malts and hops that went in here.

It’s also been suggested that the big difference happened because they stopped fermenting it quite as fully (although that could be tied up with the yeast change, the original was notoriously attenuating). I'm unlikely to get to Manchester until next MBCF, but if the Science Museum can get things to London then I'll go into town when things open up again and have a poke around. Leo Burnett's Donald Gunn got so sick of the 'do award-winning ads shift product' debate that he decided to do some number crunching to settle the matter and nail the misconceptions once and for all". Just a notch better than that awful Pub Ale perhaps, but I am not even convinced of it, it has been a very long time since I had that one.In the 1970s, it was sometimes 5 days, but generally it was 6 or 7 days from the 1960s to the 1980s. At the time, it was rare for a company to win the emotional argument for independence, and it was the first time a regional brewery had headed off an offer from a national company. I don't think the decline of Boddies was down to any single factor, more a mixture driven by management perceiving a need to make it more "mass-market" as a response to the rise of lager in the hot summers of 75/76 and the generally crap economic situation particularly in the industrial areas of the north. A spokesman for the firm argued: "[The] building was built in the Victorian times and it is an old historic brewery but it was a victim of its age. By this time Strangeways was producing only two beers, a bitter and a mild, with bitter constituting over 90 per cent of production.

A classic Mancunian brew, looks stunning as it settles in the glass, no real smell but a great creamy mouthfeel.Diastatic yeast usually are, but the British ones tend to be fairly weakly so, and British processes tend to minimise the phenolics although you can still pick them up in beers like Harveys. There is an inexorable progression towards the mass-produced nationwide product of standardised quality. Cooked to death, cheaply and very industrially made and ultimately thin and boring: as much as I love a good cask-conditioned English bitter, this clearly has very little to do with it and is barely more than a bland, fake, macro-industrial imitation of it. Boddingtons is a medium-bodied pale ale, that is renowned for its golden color, distinctive creamy head, smooth body and easy drinking character.
