It's nice to be able to mix and match amps and pedals, and this really opens up the choice of overdriven sounds; although the Marshall and Boogie amp models are particularly suited to this sort of thing, we found some great tones by adding distortion to the clean amp model.

At one point they were trying to sync the roland chorus-echo to time with the bridge of their song and got frustrated and told me it would be easier to do it with their boss units. The ME-70’s Delay section is equipped with a dedicated Phrase Looper, which offers a lengthy 38 seconds of recording time. Also, the Boss unit’s presets are all extremely usable—rather than designed with as much gain, delay and effect as possible, to impress pre-teen bedroom guitarists. At one time I would have been accused of similar stuff, more due to the fact of my pride at spending my first ever wages on my first ever guitar pedal.

The ME70 was designed to go in front of a guitar amp which is the opposite of most multi fx/modeling boards out today.

In this setting, goosing the Level knob to full on added only a minimal amount of boost, unless I also increased the Drive knob—this does not add distortion, merely more level. As expected, all the sounds were the professional, high quality tones that we have come to expect from Boss. The Preamp section now feature distinct models of some desireable amps, namely a Vox combo, Fender Bassman, 70's Marshalls, and Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier, in addition to a standard Clean channel. So you can be playing along with your typical delay setting, and do some special delay effect by pressing and holding the pedal. I would recommend this as a secondary pedal but wouldn't necessarily recommend using it as your go-to premium effects source.

The expression pedal is so-so - certainly not as responsive as your standalone expression pedals but gets the job done.

You have the tried and true Boss sound that you have come to expect with some added custom features not available on the original models. Often a device requires that you step on two footswitches at one time to turn on a tuner, enter bypass, and with the ME-70, for example, access Memory mode and the Bank up and down option. Then the OD/Dist pedal, Modulation (chorus flanger etc) and delay do exactly what those pedals should. The 70 is not bigger than the 50, it is the same size, so the 4 "modules" and their foot switches are now smaller and fitting into the space where there was 3 larger foot switches before.I won't talk you out of an ME-70 or the ME-50--they're really amazing and every time I plug in it's scary how it has the potential to replace all my pedals and then some. In addition, the Boss ME-70 can be powered by six AA alkaline batteries for approximately 12 hours of continuous use, making it an ideal choice for musicians looking for a portable pedal board. The one on the ME-50 is fantastic, and definitely doesn’t have that ‘digital trail’ thing which I’m very sensitive to as well - in fact, it’s one reason I chose the ME-50 over my analogue pedalboard.
