About this deal

This means that if you need to decide if you’re getting two points or three gold, it’ll block all of those types of decisions to be simultaneous, but players deciding to convert gold off of a roll to advancing their hammer will have to wait until you’re done. At the beginning of each player’s turn, every player will roll their two dice and claim the resources shown on their own dice. This can may allow you to roll a die again for a bonus, give you a specialty die face or let you trade gold for Glory Points. The idea of customizable dice or a dice-builder has always intrigued me – for at least ten years now… which is when I first saw the first prototype of Stephen Glenn’s game which eventually became Rattlebones… The physical constraints of the die (given that each one will only have 6 faces) makes this a bit of a different challenge than a deck-builder.

It’s also fun to pop faces out of the dice and swap in new ones, and I really like the idea of modifying dice and rolling them a bunch. It’s bright and colorful, it’s reasonably simple to learn, and it invests a lot in making sure that players stay consistently engaged. Everything is done very professionally with this company and always lets you know every step of the process.

Some people hate the randomness of dice while others appreciate the challenge and just have fun with it. This probably bodes well for the long-term success of this game because it leaves plenty of opportunity for different setup variations in the future. Where are the cool combinations and emergent strategies from mixing a bunch of abilities together and seeing what pops out? The dice are no ordinary cubes; they can be reforged by spending money to replace dice faces with progressively better ones, allowing you to slowly build a strategy (and your dice) as you move through the game.Reinforcements - After rolling their dice, the active player may use any special powers gained from purchased cards.

The mechanics and presentation of this game stand so strong on their own that the “story” seems to be an after thought. Dice Forge is a dice rolling game, where you can upgrade your die by ripping off the sides you don’t like and replacing them with sides you do.

The added cards are great - yes, more cards is always better, but you can easily play the introductory setup a dozen times and it will/can play out differently. I mean, there was an expansion for Dice Forge, but beyond that and a very complicated Roll for the Galaxy expansion, I didn’t really see a cultural shift in this direction. Granted, it’s Dice Forge, not Card Forge, so your odds of a useful ROI aren’t exactly going to be 100%, but you do have a one in six chance of rolling any die face any time you roll (and you roll a lot).

I’m being coy here, not taking a side because I’d rather let the review help a reader self-select their interest. My flatmate has rolled the Mirror of the Abyss dice face, letting him copy one rolled face from an opponent and apply its effect. The new faces are better versions of what you’ve got, offering more gold, more stones, more victory points! Highly recommend this game if you are looking to move on from the old stalwarts like Monopoly etc as this is really good value for the contents of the box and much more fun to play.Beyond just forging, however, you can also take on Heroic Feats to try and boost your reputation, earning points for completing them (and a variety of useful bonus effects). Fundamentally, it plays in a similar fashion to gradually improving your deck as in a standard deckbuilder (or, more precisely, improving cards like in Mystic Vale), but there’s something to rolling dice instead of just drawing cards, I think. This combo game, associated with the innovative mechanics of Dice Crafting, will please players of all levels.
