About this deal

Similarly, the plot seemed to have little drive, and I do wonder if this is a series that’s meant to be read all at once, where the plot is one that covers three books, rather than each book having its own self-contained plot.

It is a book that you just enjoy reading, it is pure fun and something I will recommend to fantasy lovers as a great entry of historical fiction to try. One by one, Millstone, Scot, Tebbe, Romford and Thorp all scampered - half running, half crawling, apewise - from the pinnace to the wreck.Truth skillfully weaves together the characters, including Nico; his brother, Sebastian; Sebastian’s wife, Fannie; and the “heartless deceiver” Udo. They were a sort of cross between snipers and machine guns, capable of bringing the enemy down in huge numbers at a safe distance. My thanks to NetGalley and, as ever, Head of Zeus for granting this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t too sure on his powder addiction however I also believe the author knows his stuff so I went along with it. Unfortunately, they are a consistent feature in the dialogue and quickly lose any of their initial punch. He gets details wrong, like having his characters measuring time in seconds before the hour has become a consistent length, and he doesn't know how to address a fourteenth century king. The other stand out characters are the violent drunken priest Father and the giant Scotsman ( reminded me of Tormund from Game of Thrones).

We are shown the minds of those from the top to the bottom of the army, and also small scale action and the storming of castles. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

We see it especially in the Dogs' dealings with the noblemen who lead them, particularly people like Warwick and Northampton. Their adventures are they fight their way into France are completely gripping and, as Judy says, often very funny. This is set in 1346 during the Hundred Years War and involves an English army landing in Normandy in the weeks prior to the battle of Crecy. The great battle of Crecy, supposed to be the high light of the history, has less than a chapter and almost no description of it.

The soldiers’ lives are rather brilliantly recreated – the kit, the fighting, the boredom and discomfort. Dan Jones shows us the repetitive nature of this type of warfare, of troops marching through abandoned villages and then coming up to garrisoned castles, whilst keeping the story gripping and entertaining from start to finish. We start with the landing on the Normandy beach, heading ever deeper into enemy territory toward Crécy and trying to survive. Dan Jones has ventured into historical fiction with this book, blending real historical events and figures with fictional elements to create an engaging narrative. Readers who appreciate the camaraderie and brotherhood depicted in "Band of Brothers" may find themselves drawn to the relationships and interactions among the characters in "The Essex Dogs.
