About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I love his relationship with Braileer, his vastly underqualified armorer who he wants to fire for the first week he knows him.

It has been three years since Brian McClellan concluded his Powder Mage universe series with Blood of Empire, the third and final book in his God of Blood and Powder trilogy. Además, hay un buen número de personajes secundarios (como Montego, Tadeas, etc) interesantes que aportan su granito de arena en la trama y la historia, lo cual siempre es de agradecer.

He’d made his point, but it still took a force of will to keep himself from destroying every piece of glass in the bar and then throwing it all into Morlius’s face. As mentioned previously, In the Shadow of Lightning is told from four perspectives: Demir, Kezzie, Thessa, and Idrian. After his nation's army officers are assassinated, Demir is literally the only remaining person with military leadership experience left.

McClellan mueve la historia de In the Shadow of Lightning a través de varios personajes principales: Demir, Idrian, Thessa y Kizzie. The powerful guild-families seem untouchable until one of them is murdered and the hunt for who is responsible begins. The priest could have been introduced earlier in the story to set up the rest of the series and still have served the same outcome. The world gets fleshed out rather quickly here, and while it doesn't cover a particularly enormous scope, the areas that are covered are very well done and feel life-like.The characters were varied and nuanced, meaning I got a feel for their distinct personalities, easyily and immediately. I would highly recommend this fantasy novel to anyone looking for a solid new fantasy story with a fantastic magic system. The bodyguards shooed them off as Demir and Capric approached, and they were soon inside, where Capric immediately pulled out a bottle of sherry and poured them each a glass on a fold-down side table. He glanced over the goon’s shoulder, out a window into the street, where he saw something that hadn’t been there before: a very nice carriage with sky-blue curtains, six bodyguards on the running boards, and the silic symbol of the Vorcien guild-family etched on the door.

I’m a sucker for intense worldbuilding, ragtag groups of underdogs, coinciding timelines, and a bit of romance. In the Shadow of Lightning is an incredibly unique and imaginative novel—but I wouldn’t have expected anything less from the author. only to have more and more inexplicable stuff happen as the story progresses, until around the halfway point of the game you're killing little grey men and brain-sucker monsters (Lovecraft). He felt a gentle hand on his back while he spat out bile, then wiped his mouth on an offered handkerchief. The main thing remains it's far too similar to the Powder Mage trilogy yet it lacks the character types that made the Powder Mage trilogy a success. In the process of hunting his mother’s murderer, he also tracks down a siliceer, someone who can forge godglass. Either way, I lost a small portion of my initial love but closed the novel very satisfied with all I read and eager for the following instalments.

He is cocky and arrogant at times, as well as plagued by deep self-doubt and PTSD because of the events of Holikan. By the time Overin fell to the ground beneath Slatina’s cudgel, weakly raising a hand to forfeit before she could administer a final blow, Demir knew that everyone had bought it: neither the judges, the audience, nor the bookies had any idea that the pair were well-paid for the inevitable conclusion. The novel started with a super powerful prologue, and I was feeling incredibly positive that this would indeed be McClellan’s best book so far. I found the dialogue to be incredibly cheesy and like everyone delivering those unbelievable lines was simply trying too hard to be cool.Meanwhile, Tessa is competent in her field as a siliceer and I like it when she's in her nerd mode but the rest was just too YA for me (she's a grown woman). I’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite, as they all contributed in a meaningful way towards the bottom-line and I liked them all. But seeing as both Powder Mage trilogies are among my all-time favorites, I went in with a huge level of trust that McClellan would be able to deliver. Baby Montego was likely the only other character of note but his personality can be summed up in three words: strong, smart, and loyal. Morlius had just unwittingly destroyed Demir’s life in Ereptia, and he could damn well rot in his fear.
