About this deal

Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933) was born and raised in Iwate, a rural part of Northern Japan, largely cut off from the modern world. There's something eccentric and yet captivating of Miyazawa's writing and this collection of short stories is definitely one that I will remember for a very long time. Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. The book is referenced once more during a discussion on how much stories can change from the first draft to the final draft, due to the various different versions of Night on the Galactic Railroad.

Strong also includes these earlier passages, but she puts them in a separate section of her book, omitting them from the main text. The play and the character's stellar performance as Giovanni will impact future developments and be referenced several times in the story afterwards. Four versions are known to be in existence, with the last one being the most famous among Japanese readers. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. These and a few other such mysterious happenings are enough to convey the surreal atmosphere of the dream.

I absolutely refuse [to believe] that the ends are the same no matter what religion [you belong to].

Go in the mindset of this book reading it as a children's book as it is a collection of classic fairytales and folklores for children in Japan. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. Việc ‘Chuyến Tàu Đêm Trên Dải Ngân Hà’ được coi như tác phẩm thiếu nhi kinh điển khiến mình khá bối rối, vì truyện đề cập tới hai vấn đề mà lứa tuổi này vốn khó tiếp cận là tôn giáo (Thiên Chúa giáo và Phật giáo) và cái chết. Jodo Buddhists worship the celestial Buddha Amida and pray to be reborn in the paradise of his Pure Land. Japanese fairy tales – enchanting, enigmatic stories of animals, human beings and the great natural world .

There are animal allegories like 'The Ungrateful Rat' where a rude rodent insults all the objects he meets - until he meets the Rat Trap. Although there were some hits and miss's for the stories in the book, I mostly loved it and I definitely liked the slow and almost-melancholic vibe that I had whilst reading this. As copyright for the novel has expired in Japan (and most of the world), Aozora Bunko distributes full text of the novel for free. At the end of their nine day visit, their families send them off by setting lamps adrift on the river (just as the schoolchildren do in Milky Way Railroad). When I have children, I would like to read it to them on a stary night and it will be a beautiful night.
