About this deal

I found the first half of the book, including the 5 Cs framework, to the most helpful as a really practical philosophy for carrying fewer items (but not necessarily less weight) and being more comfortable. I recommend this book to any man that thinks only they can survive the wild and that are also born in 1910. It definitely is a field guide, as the title states, since it doesn't go into too much detail, but gives you the basics. Canterbury's this "one doze medicine" reflected on what I have been collecting as knowledge over the past few years.

But if this is something that interests you, the section is as well written and diagramed as the rest. I have been learning about bushcraft for a few years but I have yet to make my own shelter, and I'm also not particularly interested in hunting or fishing, so it was a good book to solidify some of my knowledge, but I think Canterbury overestimated what someone just getting into bushcraft needs and wants from a 101 guide. I’ve found this one particularly useful and user-friendly, with easy to follow instructions and helpful illustrations. The tools and gear Canterbury uses and recommends aren't cheap, but most of these tools only need to be purchased once in a lifetime. Bushcraft 101 A Field Guide to the Art of Wilderness Survival is written by American survival expert Dave Canterbury.

Ein kleineres Kapitel über Jagd und ein größeres Kapitel über essbare Pflanzen wäre meiner Ansicht nach sinnvoll gewesen. Unless you're planning to get very lost on purpose, I don't think most people picking up a 101 guide are in the headspace to go for raccoon stew. All delivered with a dry, sardonic wit: “Without fire we are at the mercy of the sun to do our cooking unless we happen to be camped on a lava field….The 23 chapters cover food (purchased and foraged), cooking, fire, tools and utensils (purchased, created, and improvised), living off the land by hunting, trapping, butchering, foraging, making stuff like solar cookers. This book goes over many useful and effective techniques for building shelters, starting fires, trapping game, processing game, and navigation in the wilderness.

Canterbury is legit, that said this is not enough to survive if you got dropped in the middle of nowhere with nothing. The reason I really like it is because it is full of things that we can try out during out camping trip next month.
