About this deal

Our blog takes you behind the scenes at the National Railway Museum, from how we care for our world-class collections and the latest discoveries from our archives to what we've got planned for the future. The combination of comedy and parody makes it impossible not to smile at this playful interpretation.

Explore the pleasures and pastimes of the British seaside through these classic posters, charting the history of holidays at home. Hassall served up a sequel in 1911, carried out in his typical bouncy, boisterous style — this time Skeggy’s therapeutic breeze had breathed new life into an invalid, causing him to spring out of his bath chair and pull it along the seafront. An early member and later President of the London Sketch Club, he founded the New Art School (later the Hassall School of Art), which he ran for twenty years.

Other uses, including exhibition catalogue and display, broadcast, advertising, book jackets and commercial packaging, are covered by our commercial terms. The picture itself was drawn by John Hassall the son of a naval officer who was born in Walmer, Kent. We hope you agree that this is better off for all parties and that you will pay less overall and get your items quicker.

It was designed by the established commercial artist John Hassall, and provides a classic example of the Underground's early advertising. This 100% cotton rag fibre paper is known for its exceptional image sharpness, rich colors, and high level of detail, making it a popular choice for professional photographers and artists. The latter became Hassall’s second home following their first holiday there in 1908; in the 1920s, he designed a poster for the town, of a little girl in a large bonnet on the beach. Coloured lithograph depicting the caricature figure of the Jolly Fisherman prancing along the beach at Skegness, with the pleasure pier in the background. It was Easter time, 1908, when the poster was first seen by tourists who were encouraged to travel from Kings Cross on a special three shilling excursion to Skegness.

Committed to paint- ing en plein air and recording the rural lives of ordinary people, Knight’s paintings of Larmona Cove and Sennen Cove capture the wild drama and natural beauty of the Cornish coast (as in On the Cliffs, above). The old repairs needed removing and new ones adding in with correctly toned paper to disguise the repairs.Review our guidance pages which explain how you can reuse images, how to credit an image and how to find images in the public domain or with a Creative Commons licence available. The Jolly Fisherman was created by one of the most influential illustrators of the early twentieth century, John Hassall, for a commission by GNR (Great Northern Railway).

Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. It was commissioned by the then Great Northern Railway to encourage visitors to use their service to take them on their seaside breaks to Skegness. In some cases certain artefacts and age-related marks may have been left to preserve the vintage feel of the original print. The works of British poster king John Hassall remain a breath of fresh seaside air, says Lucinda Gosling. However, the publishers assumed that the image was in the public domain, and so did not obtain permission from the copyright holders, Skegness Town Council.
