About this deal

on a Budget filled me with new cooking confidence and renewed my hunger for discovering delicious recipes. I’m also interested in the crumpet recipe although the frying of them looks a tiny bit tricky (and I’ve also seen the Great British Bake Off episode where that was a technical challenge), and the “Super Carrot Cake” overnight oats. Smoothie recipes often fall victim to over-the-top ingredient lists, which has always put me off joining the early morning blending craze. I had this book out from the library for a long, long time, but I didn’t spend any more time reading it than I usually do with cookbooks and I didn’t make anything from it. That spread is commonly available in the UK but not so much in the US, and a few weeks after getting home, I had a major craving for that sandwich.

Two small downsides for me, the cover is awful and downgrades the appearance of the quality of recipes the book contains, there are some beautiful photographs of great food inside, I've no idea why they've pictured a burger and the colour scheme of yellow and cerise is garish. Packed with money-saving hacks and batch cooking tips and tricks, you'll be a total pro at thrifty cooking in no time. Our way of thinking about food involves eating delicious, wholesome, even indulgent meals that are both comfortingly familiar and exciting, and without any need for meat or dairy. I find many cookbooks have insanely long ingredient lists packed with obscure and expensive items, so I often stick to my old favourites or Google specific ideas. I also question the amount of plant-based sausage included, since that’s not cheap, and I’ve seen recipes (not here) for making your own that would be at least a little more cost effective.Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. I tried the fresh pasta recipe, it was brilliant, really easy to make with clear instructions, I tentatively tried this again to use for ravioli and it was amazing, no leaking of the fillings and perfect al dente pasta, the best fresh pasta I have eaten. On the one hand, I can appreciate that cooking seasonally has it’s benefits, some to do with cost, but plant-based yogurt or butter, a surprising amount of frozen puff pastry, fresh herbs, and a lot of spices, including make-your-own curry pastes, that’s not necessarily budget friendly unless you’re really committed to using up all of the berbere spice blend or pepitas.

Whether you’re living completely meat-free, or just looking to introduce more plant-based meals into your week, this is the money-saving cookbook for you. Perhaps if it had been approached with a ‘when you get some free time’ or ‘this is a great way to spend a quiet weekend’ attitude then it would’ve felt more relevant.I did read it cover to cover but I’d recommend reading Hilary’s review and the reviews of those readers who tried at least some of the recipes. I tried out the “Big Batch Bolognese Sauce” and turned it into a spaghetti bolognese on the first night and a lasagne on the second (as they suggested). I do like sweet things but I don’t like sugar in my savory dishes but I might like a couple of the recipes for dinner/dessert. book was given to me about four years ago by my friend Sharon, who is also a highly sought after plant-based retreat-caterer, and I still use nearly all the recipes every week.
