Roachie's Reviews 'A spellbinding tale glistening with magic and mystery that completely enchanted me. The most recent one that fits that description is a disturbing novel entitled Ohio by Stephen Markley, who grew up in the town I am still living in. Set in Victorian Britain, Seren Rhys is an orphan being sent to live with her Godfather in a remote house in Wales.

Characterisation – From the first introduction to Seren, I knew there was something special about her. The Candleman won the Welsh Books Council's Tir Na n'Og Prize and Catherine was also shortlisted for the remarkable Corbenic, a modern re-inventing of the Grail legend. Seren imagines that she is investigating in the manner of a detective in one of her books, Sherlock Holmes.I thought the clockwork crow’s sarcastic and grumpy attitude perfectly balanced Seren’s emotionally charged character and enjoyed the dialogue shared between the two of them.

Both stories take the main character underground on a rescue mission, with the current story having Seren descend a golden staircase to travel to the palace of ice. She stands on bitterly cold train platform, waiting to begin her journey to her godfather’s family in Wales. I was looking for some wintery magic when I picked up this book and couldn't pass up the steampunk aspects of the clockwork crow.Catherine’s writing sparkles with energy and, quite often, one finds oneself rereading sections and marvelling at the talent of this extraordinary author. The Clockwork Crow’within the stranger’s parcel only adds to the mystery, and Seren’s need for truth…. Faced with equally imperfect adults that often treat her in a dismissive way, she struggles to find balance.
