Use of 600 grit is for the first coat (when fully dry), even finer grit, or very worn 600 grit for the second coat, final coat 4x0 wire wool. I have heard that denibbing is a good thing to do after each coat of finish so I wanted to get some advice on where to get the pads from and what sort of grits? Aluminium Oxide abrasive ('Green' general purpose and 'Red' very fine pads), Silicon Carbide abrasive ('Grey' ultra fine pads), Phenolic resin bonded to nylon fibre pad. Denibbing is a really important step in applying any finish, it helps either the adhesion or absorption of further coats and can make a real difference to your projects.

I use 0000 (four-noughts) wire wool (that's a grade finer than John, above) for applying the wax, but you can use a pan scourer (the green or white matty things, not Brillo pads, they are too coarse). But if it's removing raised wood fibres from a water based finish or stain then a tiny bit more abrasion is helpful. The Farécla Denibbing block has a removable 35mm interface pad allowing firm pressure to be applied if necessary.Apply the first coat of finish, and wait for it to fully dry based on the manufacturers instructions. There may be some benefit to adhesion, when you denib, but it will be limited and the second coat should be fine. Starting with the obvious reason and that is to get your finish as smooth and professional looking and feeling as possible. If it doesn’t that means that more denibbing is required, and after that if it still isnt smooth then it probably hasn’t been as sanded as well as it should of. The De-nibbing Pad should also be used when you have applied your last coat of finish to finish the job off feeling extra smooth.

I don't know why I am answering a thread on Finishing, my Finishing usually leaves a lot to be desired! Mirka Mirlon denibbing pads are especially designed for sanding surfaces prior to the application of finishing coats, primers or lacquers. Denibbing is a process to remove nibs -when a varnish is applied to wood the grain is raised so it feels rough when the varnish has dried -hence the need for fine abrasive (abrasive isnt made wit sand these days! The denibbing is a quick and easy process, its not as intense as sanding and many people do just use a hand pads to go over the floor, or you can put it under a flat base mop to do also.It really depends of what type of de-nibbing you're doing, if it's specks of dust trapped in Osmo or Danish Oil or a wiping varnish then that's all you need. Says he currently none too patiently waiting for oil to dry so that I can get another coat on today. You don't need to go over the same area any more than once or twice, it should feel smooth after one or two light passes. These are a 30mm abrasive veclro backed sanding block, ideal for removing small imperfections from paintwork when you need to do a small localised repair, such as a localised deep scratch or flattening back paint after a stone chip repair. Basic purpose is to remove/flatten any minute specs of dust, etc, that were airborne and have settled while the finish was drying, and/or any specs of rubbish that were in the liquid finish as you applied it (though you do strain your material through a coffee filter and old pair of ladies tights before EVERY use, don't you? It might seem counter-intuitive to be sanding a finish that you’ve just applied, so I prefer to think about it as polishing the finish that you’ve applied rather than sanding it.As I havent done this before I presume that you just run a cloth or pad of sorts over the finish gently to give the silky smooth finish? And not sure about oil, but for paint and varnish, use a tack cloth before every coat/after denibbing (though I have heard that they can leave a residue that affects some finishes, though personally I've never noticed that). Also as the instructions on the tin say to sand the bare wood to 120 grit so I would need to use the same grit between coats and then like 600 grit after the final coat?
